Some tracks sound better in poor YouTube audio quality

I've downloaded several albums after being hooked on
YouTube tracks, only to find out that the sharp,
squeaky-clean album sound makes the track a bit less
interesting. The "woolly" sound from cassettes and poor
recordings sometimes gives music an extra texture.

Ever experienced the same thing?

People tend to like the first version of the movie/song/book
they experienced. The remake/remix/remaster is never as
good.

"Ever experienced the same thing?"

> no. i do use youtube (and lo-fi sound clips at amazon or
similar websites) to discover a particular artist or band
sometimes, but i have always preferred the proper audio
quality so far...

do you have any examples of tracks that sounded better in
poor audio quality to you?

An example that comes to mind is BoC's Twoism. I much prefer
the release before it was remastered. It's too crisp on the
remaster.

i remember people saying they liked gantz graf before they
heard it on flac, saying the mp3 compression made it less
harsh. cant think of any of my own examples, but i know what
you're talking about.

Yes, Twoism is one of the few things where I prefer the
sound of the low quality version.

The same thing applies to A Few Old Tunes. If they were to
be released properly, it would propably sound
disappointing.

It depends on the music though, I don't think that fuzzy
tape sound would have suited Autechre's newest material.

Didn't so-and-so master an entire album in realplayer,
man that is so '99...

But seriously know what you mean, that crunchy tin-coat is
just what the ear is looking for sometimes. youtube though?
that's too good quality for my liking...no more than
streamed 56k modem qual is the way

I don't know about ''better'', but it can be interesting.
Especially with harsh sounds. Heavy beats and high pitched
notes. Squaking guitar sounds and crunchy stuff in lo-fi
often doesn't seem as abrasive or as driving as I expected
it to be when I hear a high quality version of it.

it gives all the 80's clips that nice worn cassette tape
sound, just as fuzzy as my memories.
