Has anyone heard of this, or played it? Just thought I'd
let the space-sim fans around here know about it in case no
one has. Freespace 2 is a great space combat game originally
released in 1999, but publisher Interplay has gone under,
and it has since been released as an open-source app and has
been developed further by the mod community. Available for
download are enhanced graphics mods and several fully
voice-acted campaigns. It's all free for download, though
you might have to do a little hunting to get all the cool
mods that are available.

Here's a link to a forum where the installer can be
downloaded. It is only 19mb in itself but, if you allow it
to download everything for the game, it will require about
3.5gb of space. You can scale this number down by choosing
not to download the cutscenes and the in-game music etc, I
believe, though I chose not to. On this page, you can
find graphical mods available for download. I installed the
"Milliways" set of graphic enhancements, but the ones listed
under ".VP Files" alter the graphics as well. I have not
tried these ones, so I don't know if combining the two is
feasible or if it will crash. I do know that the Milliways
enhancements will update the game to look somewhere between
directx 8 and 9, which, for a free game, isn't half bad.

If you do decide to give Freespace Open a go, make sure once
you've downloaded the game that you run it from the icon of
a dog's paw called "Launcher." I say this because there are
7 other .exe's included and it can be a hassle to figure out
which to use. The first time you run the launcher, be sure
to read through all the tabs and check the boxes for
features you want to enable. There is a very minor settings
menu in-game where you can change basic detail level, but
all the hardcore settings are found in the launcher. Thanks
for enduring my videogame rant,

is this anything like super mario brothers on the nes? that
game was pretty badass, so if it is at all similar i might
enjoy this game.

Sorry, I think that screenshot may have been misleading
because of the large capital ship. You actually pilot small,
agile fighter, interceptor, and bomber craft in an effort to
protect larger capital ships, or destroy them. Also in the
screenshot I chose, the HUD is almost non-visible, but you
can change it to any color you want. So, it's more of a
flight-sim than a strategy game like homeworld.

Phresch: I never played Star Raiders, it was just a few
years before my time. I'm sure I would have loved it back in
the day, though.

Chaosmachine: I loved the original Privateer, man that game
was great. Never played privateer 2 but I'll definitely get
on that.

OK: Are you sure about Privateer 3? I wasn't able to find
any info on it.

I, for one, am still waiting for a directX 9 (or now directX
10) edition of x-wing vs tie-fighter.

Please Lucasarts, don't leave us fly-boys hanging!

By unanimous vote, this thread
is moderately
subpar.
