Jarre is fake! MC808 presets ahoy.

To some, this is old news. To others, it is grave news that
could shatter their very existence. Erm...

Anyway, I bought the new Jean Michel Jarre album, and could
swear I recognized bits of it from a fiddle with the pretty
MC808 at a music shop from a few months prior to the
purchase of this stunning album. It turns out Mr.Jarre
literally just took preset patterns made by various other
musicians for the MC808, changed a few sounds here and
there, added the odd solo, and called it "Teo and Tea!"

Cry-time, child-boy.

Jarre fraud

Unfortunately, that video doesn't show you the original Teo
and Tea clips, but rest assured, the album tracks are
IDENTICALL.

come on - b12 are using presets from drumatic vst - a
freeware drumsynth - now that's something that shaterred me

It's weird, that sort of thing really shatters me, too, but
lots of people seem to say that it doesn't matter, providing
the music is good.

But it does matter, damnit! I'm can't explain why,
but it does. In this kind of music, the joys of
listening stem from the sound design and programming and
stuff. If the musician in question hasn't actually done much
of that, then, well, that's a bit annoying.

I think it matters. It's like someone claiming they painted
a picture, when really all they did was apply some photoshop
filters to a photograph.

maybe he conceived as a song made entirely with hardware
presets?

Jarre's newest stuff is shit. End of. Chronologie was at the
fringes, but everything since then has been dire. The man
lost his way. Sadly.

Some of you may be jumping to conclusions here. Not sure you
know this, but Jarre has a long working relationship with
Roland, and was given prototypes of both the latest SH
version and the MC808 Groovebox before their release.
Additionally, one of the programmers hired for the new album
is Tim Huifken, one of the original programmers of the
MC808. Both he and Jarre is credited as MC808 programmers in
the T&T booklet, and they did work on the album before the
MC808 came out.

There are strong indicators that Jarre and Huifken
collaborated to put something into to the MC808, so while
this is not confirmed by Jarre yet, you are all jumping to
conclusions in this chicken-and-egg situation.

If you check out the newest SH box (dont recall the number
right now) there are presets there provided by Jarre, so
it's unlikely that the same thing is impossible for the
MC808.

to be quite honest T&T was bad. I love Fresh News and
Chatterbox, but the rest has all been done before. Like
no-one else has thought about recording an orgasm and
putting that on track before!!!

Saw this on a Jarre forum, JMJ could've made the presets
himself as he does endorse Roland a lot now, but I would'nt
be suprised if it was preprogrammed presets.

Futureimage, the whole album tells a narrative story about
two people in love, that's why there are orgasms. Note how
this track is in the beginning of the album, which
symbolises the beginning of a relationship, where sparks
fly.

It's not there to be innovative, but to tell the story.

at first i would really want to say: shame on you. i mean
what the fuck? it's about that music right? so you licked
jarre before and now you don't? pathetic.

that's the same like my ex-gf loved skalpel and dj shadow
until i told her that they where using samples - you know
from one second to the other.

the second thing is that this is actually no proof at all -
three movies on youtube you get it? YOUTUBE. besides one
post beneath this movie was quite good - maybe he actually
did those presets for them?

seriously you guys.

I heard Beethoven used the presets on his pianoforte when he
composed his piano sonatas; that kind of cheating is like
claiming to have painted a picture when you just
photoshopped an existing picture. Fraud.

that's quite an interesting story, but still i find this
release weak for the way it sounds. It does nothing to me
really, there are no real points that pull me in directly
from the first listen, which normally happens instantly to
me. Maybe it's the "new-age" "generic" approach he applied?

There's a marked difference between using preset single hit
sounds and using patterns IMO (if that is what is being
suggested here- I've not heard the Jarre work, so can't
comment on that).

If I made a bunch of presets for a piece of equipment, and
then was criticized for using those presets on my album, I
would get pretty pissed off about that.

We know for a fact that Jarre gave Roland patches for the
new SH-whatsit'sname while it was a prototype (and I saw a
Roland promo video recorded in JMJs studio a year ago), so
why not also contribute to the MC808? Keep in mind that
Roland's MC808-programmer Tim Huifken *worked* with JMJ and
is credited in the album for "Groovebox special programming"
- not just programming in general but SPECIAL programming.
Just read the booklet.

Yes, I know that, that also brings up another thing that I
disagree with. I don't see why JMJ has to make a whole album
out of a relationship with Anne Parillaud. I find it a bit
corny and embarassing to be honest, especially when the
orgasms are Anne's herself. It's flying in the face of
Charlotte Rampling and Isabel Adjani a bit surely.

I don't mind if he uses presets, Chatterbox and Fresh News
are great, it's just that I think he's done a lot better.
Oxy 7-13, Metamorphoses and Aero are brilliant albums. I
know he's trying something different, but maybe he should've
spent a little more time on it.

offline Glenn on 2007-06-26 16:27 [#02097386]

Corny? Ok, the album is about love in general, and how
people (in general) are seeking love. It's not about him and
Anne, but surely inspired by his marriage 2 years ago. I
dont think making an album about the concept of love is
strange at all, as it's the most universal theme possible,
and everyone writes love songs all the time! Everyone! Why
not also JMJ, but his angle is a little different on this
album. It's not a rosy red teen story.

As far as the orgasms go, they are of course acted by his
actress wife, but it has been 10 years since he divorced
Charlotte so at one point he and she should be over that
period and get on with their lives. As far as Isabelle goes,
she wasnt a very nice lady, to put it mildy. I cant see how
JMJ owe it to all his old wives and dates to not do anything
sexual on his albums.

I agree it's not a very good album. But it has a concept
(that is not as "intelligent" as other albums, but still
valid) and is not empty in terms of ideas.

Let me quote Jarre from 1989, and I think this is 90%
exactly what he said, on the question what he wants to
achieve in his music; "I want to express in my music the
very same things as any other musician or composer, from any
culture and any time, be it a classical baroque composer or
a stone age caveman banging two rocks together or a Chinese
flutist.... and that is feelings and ideas of love, desire,
ambitions, beauty... universal themes that is inherit in
man".

I think that was a humble thing to say. He does not want to
be bigger or different than anyone else, sort of.

So there you have it.... Teo & Tea is simply Jarre's first
love album, and why not.... hehe

Okay, I see your point, but anybody could just get a bunch
of preset patterns of a groove-drum-machine thing, add a few
bits here and there, and claim it's theirs. There's no
imagination or musicality in that, dear sir child-man.

I know, but he hasn't been credited by Roland for doing
them, and there's no evidence he had anything to do with
them except for the fact he did some stuff for another

Maybe the arrangement he has with them was, "I'll do some
presets for you, if I can pass some of your presets off as
my own material and you won't sue me for it." ? :P

For all the people who have an intellect that doesn't
compare favourably to that of a sparrow, this is a joke.

Yeah, sure, to him it's a good idea but I'm just saying it's
alienated me a bit. I don't dislike Jarre as a person
anymore for it, I just think he's done much better work in
recent years.

I'd love to hear a continuation of his IDM stuff like Body

him.

Sorry to have to put you all in a "I told you so" situation,
but it has now been confirmed that Jarre actually created
those patterns for Roland, so if you ask what came first -
the chicken or the egg - in this case it was Jarre who came
first.

Jarre explained through Aero Productions (his management),
as relayed to a Jarre fan site, the following:

===========
Jean Michel Jarre explained that he entered into a
partnership with Roland Japan last year, to collaborate with
and contribute to demos, patterns and presets for their
future products.

Jean Michel Jarre explained that the Roland MC808 was one of
these products, therefore it is not surprising that certain
elements of his NEW 'TÉO & TÉA' Album appear on the Roland
MC808, or any other recent Roland product for that matter.
===========

Feel free to post this on other forums.
