Yeah, looking forward to messing around with this myself.

This time I am giving them the benefit of the doubt.... When
3 came out, I thought it was a piece of shit update, but now
I couldnt imagine life without the Combinator...

There are several things in 4 that look like they will
become invaluable elements of the workflow.

is off the hook

I am extremely excited about the modular synth, the
'hardware' arpegiator, and the rhythm mixer thing. I could
give 2 shits about updates to the sampler or pre existing
synths. They work as good as they need.

Now, I really wish they had updated some of the effects. Not
that they don't have a decent selection, but I would like to
see some better choices insofar as their phaser and flanger.
As well, a nice simple modeled tape delay unit would top
things up nicely.

I share the same sentiment. As do many in the Props forums.
But for what its worth, to that concern someone had replied
the following:

Two distortion units, two reverbs, two compressors, two EQs,
phaser, chorus/flanger, unison, delay (+ delay in Thor +
delay in RV7000), limiter, stereo enhancer, vocoder, filter
(+ audio input on Thor and Malström for using their
filters). And to top it off you can build crazy multi-FX
using Combinator.

As far as I can tell, those are all the FX in the book,
except maybe a harmonizer/octaver

The flanger and phaser do not sound good. They need some
better sounding ones that don't sound so phoney.

Also, whilst the one is reason 3 was an improvement (and for
certain styles scream's tape compression works well), they
still need to add a better compressor, IMO.

Thor looks good though, almost like a cross between NI's
Massive and reFX's Vanguard. The sound samples are largely
good, but a couple of them do sound bit like Reason's
existing synths fed through a couple of FX, but the real
proof will be in having a play with it.

Yes. I hope they work on the rendering engine a bit more.
Well, there is always rewire through cubase.

I don't like having both programs open :(

Oscillik, you should be able to get an upgrade for 99
Euros.

Taxi: Yeah, I hear you on the rendering, it has improved,
but still needs a bit of work. I'd also (at least until
Reason comes with a proper 'Live' mode) like to see an
option to bounce each track (or ideally, every different
bar) to a .wav automatically labelled with the name of the
part you have assigned and a number. Eg Bassline001.wav,
Voc003.wav, etc
This would also help when you're seriously mastering a track
in another program too (rather than manually bouncing each
line).

Currently manually bouncing each part to a wav and then
loading them into ableton takes forever.

Have you tried rewiring them to ableton and then sending out
the different instruments in separate chanels through the
rewire interface? You should be able to record each separate
channel simultaneously through each rewire channel in
ableton (just like you would set an audio in port), thereby
giving you the multitrackability without the headache.

I can testify that that approach is really a good way to do
it. I have been doing it alot recently.

Thanks Skink and Taxi, no I've not tried that, but will look
into it sharpish (was currently going through loads of old
tracks and doing it manually for a live gig). Ta very much
:)

Regarding the rendering, perhaps its likely it has
dramatically increased since apparently version 4 is the
first update since the program's debut, which has required a
complete rewrite of the program.

Yeah, certain feature requests of the past may not have fit
into their personal philosophy or could have be argued
against, but one thing they surely would have to agree on is
their rendering engine. (unless they are deaf)

I spent a long time denying the fact there was a problem
with the rendering. But since i have started using other
things more and more i have noticed a very big difference. I
will definitely be getting this so i suppose i will find out
soon enough.

: )

the sequencer upgrade looks great too. They should FL-like

looks like a good upgrade overall.
