Man, you were trying to dubstep and came up with this? You
really missed the target! Not a bad track by any means,
you're giving that machinedrum quite a workout :)
BTW The kick sound is particularly good (but not really
dubstep sounding).

If you're doing dubstep, try using sampled drum sounds,
rather than synthesised ones. And a simple square/sine for
the sub bass, layered with some more audible cleanish dnb
type bass. Then some higher pitched oriental sounding
strings/wind etc. over the top of it.

Or just write a drum n bass tune, then slow it down to about
130 bpm.

Not dubstep in any thinkable way, but the production is
really interesting. I actually kinda like it.

not your best track, but then again i suppose it's just a
fragment or demo. i don't know much dubstep. i actually
still enjoy your EEEXPEE shenanigans.

next time, i say bring the noise.

sorry, thought i'd have something more interesting to say...

be pleased?

ceri JC: do they distort the bass track in dubstep like they
do in DNB?

It really depends on who is doing it. I can do a dubstep
bass sound easily without it being distorted. Some people
aren't going to like the advice I am going to give here
because its an expensive option, but dubstep bass sounds
really come easily with an analogue monosynth. It takes me a
vew seconds to throw one together on my moog. Using reverb
on your bassline can help too.

Another piece of advice would be to listen to some dancehall
instrumentals. Dancehall has a similar rhythm to dubstep,
and IMO is an easier one to get the feel of.

Man...they only do that on shitty post-'99 dnb.

:/

The bassline in 90%+ of proper dustep tracks is actually
done with software synths. :)

You can do it with analogue synths of course (my
101's current patch is actually a dubstep bass at the
moment), but it's not really necessary. I agree about not
distorting the bass (or if you do, keep it minimal). I tend
to use either a sine or square for the sub bass and then a
cleanish sounding bass for the audible bass (with a bit of
non-lfo controlled freq/res modulation for the wobble in
places).

Hope that helps.

i've yet to hear an acustic dubstep track i.e with bass
guitar(extra sub) guitar(effects), piano, drums etc , bits
of vocals..

i dont just mean dub, but the dubstep feel

So, from what I gleamed, "dubstep bass" isn't determined by
the notes played, but by the effects placed on what ever
notes are played. And those notes can be a monotonous
mariachi bassline? Just put the required effects on any type
of bassline and you can transform it to dubstep?

Yes thank God, the curse of "real instruments" that nearly
did for DnB in the late 90s hasn't reached dubstep yet. ;)

In all seriousness, I have seen an acoustic band doing a
cover of a couple of kode 9's tracks being mixed, albeit
slowed down to about 120bpm. It was pretty good given that
it was done with instruments, but acoustic instruments (used
as is rather than sampled and fx'd) don't really sound right
for the dark oppressive, dread filled mood of most dubstep
IMO.

I'd be interested to hear some dubstep done with traditional
dub production values (session musician's parts recorded,
then fx'd and mixed by the engineer/producer afterwards).

Can understand now why you must be going deaf huh. You know
it kinda could be dubstep if it wanted to be.. that
open=>close warbly bit in particular. Kinda like ceri says
you could tweak or add some inconspicious layer to
the bass which would boost up the chordancy for really
resonating on a dancefloor.
Repeated listening however is what makes it wicked, so minus
dubstep is a good thing in this case,,
