Cool, no level scaling. It's hard to tell from these bleak shots,
but hopefully it will retain the humor and we can kill
children.

I enjoyed Oblivion for about 20 hours but I could not bring
myself to complete it, just too fundamentally broken and I
have it for 360 so I couldn't patch it. Not that I'd really
want to, Elder Scrolls is so bland, but Fallout, yeah, this
could be fascinating if Bethesda learned from their mistakes
and nail the style.

The glimpses of the post-apocalyptic landscape look great, I
mean, who doesn't like a well done post-apocalypse?

''Well done'', lol, they got nuked! Kind of funnyish.

I like that they explicitly state that they will not reward

I'm pretty bummed about it. Firstly, the character design
for the Muties looks just like Orcs from oblivion with a
slight makeover. Despite how hard Bethesda is trying to
ensure that this is NOT Oblivion with Guns, I find it hard
to believe until they show me some original character
design. They say it will feature "violence" to quiet all the
apprehensive fans of the original Fallout's over-the-top
gore. They do say there will be an exploding head animation,
but judging by Bethesdas earlier work, that will probably be
the extent of similarities between the old and new. Like
Oblivion, most death animations will likely consist of
people slumping over to the ground with absolutely no flair.
I'm not saying it's because of lack of talent, but rather
the insane computation needed to render FO gore in realtime.
Also, they've released hype about a portable NUKE rocket
launcher. You're thinking low-yield most likely, right?
Nope, it's at least a 1 megaton blast judging by the
screenshots. The ill-conceived weapon's name? The "fatman."
A poor attempt at capturing the humor of the original, if
you ask me. Someone at a different website pointed out that
there is no chance of the gun going away since it was
released with a hype in a press conferance and graphical
work has already started on it (hence the screenshot I saw.)
I don't think I need to point out how ridiculous a portable
nuclear weapon is in a game where you are specifically
trying NOT to become irradiated and/or vaporized. I know
they will have some clever suit or "radpak" that keeps the
radiation at bay, but how exactly do they expect you to use
it and then get away from the blast? I'm praying to God that
they don't invent some "nuke-blast-proof" suit as well. I'm
happy that at least a spiritual successor is being made, but
without Turn based combat, isometric top-down view, and
insane amounts of gore, this is NOT Fallout 3. Anyone who's
played the original games will understand, how could it
possibly be Fallout if you can't chop a person in

Well since you are so gifted, why don't you explain to me
what is wrong with anything I said? Maybe you're referring
to my expectations for gore in the game? Yes, I know
politics always plays a part in it and Bethesda has to get
the game onto Walmart's shelves. Doesn't change what Fallout
was in the past...

It's kind of weird that you seem to be able to so accurately
determine the megaton value of a computer game nuke blast
from a screen shot...

Dude look at the screenshot, he fires the nuke all the way
out onto the horizon, and its a gigantic blast. I said at
least
a megaton, because I've seen enough nuclear blast
footage to know that 1 megaton was the smallest size the
military used, and that it had a blast comparable in size to
the one in the screenshot. Why would you even take what I
said so literally? It's a portable nuke launcher, isn't the
idea alone retarded enough to forgive my estimation? The
resulting LIGHT from the blast alone would be enough to
permanently blind every living thing for at least a 5 mile
radius, whether their eyelids are closed or not. The only
possible way to save face with this weapon will be to end
the game with it, meaning no matter where you shoot the
blast destroys you too. It's just simply too idiotic
otherwise.

"Why would you even take what I said so literally?"

Well, you seemed to take the screenshot pretty literally...

I'm not over-enthusiastic about the idea either, but as they
say they're not rewarding itchy trigger fingers, and since
you have to watch yourself even when drinking water because
it gets you radiated, I'll bet the gun is made so that it's
basically reserved for special occasions and a last-resort
thing; you'll probably get massive radiation from it, etc,
and you'll know this, so you'll probably have to make it a
tactical decision when you know you have the resources to
pull it off.

"Well, you seemed to take the screenshot pretty
literally..."

Does that mean that, when I see a screenshot of the player
character holding a weapon that obscures almost a third of
the screen, firing off onto the horizon a projectile that
produces a nuclear mushroom cloud, I am supposed to assume
it is something other than just that?

No, but they can probably take some artistic liberties with
the effects it produces, plus they can probably say they use
less megatons than what the army currently operates with as
their minimum charge.

Whoa. Well it wouldn't be a videogame thread at XLT... or
anywhere else on the internet... without a healthy dose of
jaded cynicism, so it's all good. And I share some of your
fears. Specifically I'm afraid of the ''attitude'' of the
game, and if they can capture the decadent spirit of
Fallout.

I think it sounds like it's going to play well though, I'm
not that worried. I like how they've acknowledged Oblivion's
fatal flaws, that's encouraging. I don't want the game to
play just too much like the old Fallouts. They're old.

Can't wait for the inevitable Deus Ex 3 (anti)hype storm!

²

I've played it for an hour of 3 and I was stunned. If I
weren't at work, I would be playing instead of posting here.
The combat system, atmosphere and character building is
definitely the way I hoped it would be. It's not just
Oblivion in the Fallout world. It's Fallout done by
Bethesda.

And seeing how Bethesda has grown over the past years this
has to be a great ride.

Also the combat is great because it forces you to use the
VATS (a targeting system Fallout 2 fans will surely
recognize.) It's like they made the shooting deliberately
hard to keep you from playing this like Oblivion or some
shooter.

Just dropped in to stir some shit and point out that the
bomb used over Hiroshima was a 15/20 kiloton nuclear
device.

And, to quote World Book encyclopedia:
Today most nuclear devices have yields of less than 1
megaton.

that's strange, because I googled before posting that
earlier to double check and found one website saying it was
1 megaton. maybe they rounded up?

I came across this mistake several times. I don't know where
it comes from. Maybe people think that 1 megaton is a
refernce yield of the first bomb or something?

Game seems good. Feels enough like Fallout in terms of art
direction and humor, and the customization is familiar.
There still seems to be plenty of freedom. But the right to
be evil has always been wasted on me in these games, I can
only play as a hero. I don't kill off whole towns or steal
from anyone. It's been a handicap for me at times in the
other Fallout games.

Too bad this game retains the zombie Oblivion faces and
horrid animation... I'd like to use 3rd person view in
certain situations and environments, but I just can't, it
kills the immersion as I gracefully skate over the rocky
lithosphere.

I'm in the middle of a few other games so I'm not going to
go too deep into this yet, but it seems legit.

Unfortunately I can't rely upon the link to find pictures of

may have been the one from the beginning where you are
supposed to trigger an abandoned nuclear bomb in the middle
of a city or something.
