I think using the graphics, sound and setting together
effectively is what makes a good atmosphere. The story is
only part of that. Its like cinematography in film. There
are films like the Russian Ark that have great
cinematography, and are worth watching solely for how well
it is put together. However, I couldn't watch films only
because of the strength of their camera work. That seems
like an awfully shallow movie going existence.

I think that half life one has a good atmosphere, even
though by todays standards everything about it is lacking.
IMO something that is quality doesn't become irrelevant even
when it starts to look dated.

Max Payne was so much fun. I got a kick out of his facial
expression and poetic ruminations in the first one. Second
one was an improvement in every way, yet they just cut the
series off.

And because MGS games are loaded with cut-scenes and codec
conversations, people erroneously assume they are low on
gameplay, which couldn't be further from the truth, they are
overloaded with subtle gameplay touches and tons of things
to do. Every time I play I figure out a new way to tackle
the bosses or take out a nigga. The games give you 8 million
weapons and items to utilize if you want to. And actually I
abuse the codec conversations anyway, spending hours calling
my crew and seeing what kind of strange dialogues I can coax
out of them in certain situations. There's some hilarious
stuff, there's nothing like Metal Gear.

Max Payne 2 was an improvement in every way except for that
fact that they changed Payne's look. That irked me all the
way through the game ;p

It was still awsome though.

Cool. You should really give System Shock 2 a shot as well.
I think you would be less of a meanie to Bioshock if you
played the games that inspired it.

What about Thief, the ''other'' pioneering stealth game? I'm
curious what you think about that series.

You've got it the wrong way around: In a good game, story
dictates setting, graphics and sound; all these things
should be based on the story, not just randomly selected.
That's when you get those games where it's looks like they
tried making a creepy area, but then all the music is hard
powerchord muzak-rock which gets instantly interrupted by
another song when you face an enemy (which is every other
second).

I find it works quite well if you enable the turn-based
combat option, but yeah, it gets confusing if you don't.

Actually, it's weird that what people complain about with
MGS is the fact that it actually has a story... They
don't mention gameplay or anything like that, they just go
"aaaaaa! Cutscenes!"

I think it's because of the mp3 ADHD culture: "GIVE ME
ACTION NOW SO THAT I WON'T HAVE TO THINK!"

I tried playing System Shock back when it first came out..
at my cousin's place or something.. he had a good computer.
Thing is, I can only remember being scared to death by the
first enemy I encountered (I had been playing seventh guest
right before, and it was late at night, and no-one was
home).. I'm still a bit traumatised, I think.

I've tried thief, but I didn't play it long enough to see if
there was a story or not.. It kind of put me off when I was
pitted against zombies... That just totally didn't fit the
game.

7th Guest used to scare me so much. It probably had
something to do with the awful acting. I remember playing
the maze bit really late at night and there was that
godawful clanging 'weeeooooo' noise whenever you went down a
dead end. EVERY time I jumped, every fucking time.

I also had the speakers standing a bit behind me when I was
playing it.. having that sound, and that "coooome, cooooome"
sound from that one corridor creeping up behind you.. it was
too fucking much! I mean, I was only, like, 7 or 8 or
something...

I used to listen to the soundtrack on disc 2 during car
journeys to visit my nan. It was round about when I got my
first Discman that and the Boom Shake The Room single were
the only things I had which werent vinyl or tape.

No, I don't have it backwards, I think you do. You just
mentioned a few games where you stated that the story is
missing, but liked the setting of. So either you seem to
have a skewed understanding of what setting is, or your are
just arguing for the sake of trying to keep up an argument.

Personally, you kind of sound like one of those old people
who are screaming that music should sound like this and this
and that, and needs *** instruments to be music, and that
its not real music otherwise. I think your really
restricting your enjoyment in games by seeming to uphold
such a narrow view of what makes a game good.

Setting? I liked the worlds' openness, but the world isn't
the setting; it may be part of it, but setting also includes
your reason for being where you are (which is a part of the
story, more precisely, the introduction), the entire context
around you. Being able to pick flowers and explore is a
feature of the game or the gameworld. The part of the
story that set the setting for Morrowind was that short and
rather nonsensical "you were in prison, like, and then,
like, someone put you on a boat here." When you add to that
the "timeplace" (the Elder Scrolls lore which constitutes
the laws of the world), you're closer to having what can be
described a setting (though I'm pretty sure I'm missing
something more too, I just can't remember what).

I'm not really actively restricting my enjoyment, I'm just
saying I don't enjoy mindless games; they bore me. I don't
get a game and then start playing it with the thought "oh,
it doesn't have a story," but rather, I just try games (or
check reviews), and when there's nothing but repetitive
shooting with the sort of "shell of variability" that simply
consists of letting you have a shotgun and then a silly
"teleporter-to-hell gun 2000X!" instead of just the pistol
or that your environment suddenly changes slightly, from an
office complex to an underground lab, I get bored quickly.
At least that's one thing they got right in Morrowind: You
don't just change "levels" with a load screen in-between,
you actually travel to where you're going, and even if it's
just a random cave, you sort of have your own reason for
going in there: You're exploring.

I could also say the same for you about restricting your
enjoyment; you're reacting to "endless cutscenes" and
whathaveyou.

how do you feel about 2d shooters (eg. ikaruga) and fighting
games (eg. street fighter 3: third strike)? or puzzle games
like tetris?

I've already said what I think about puzzle games: I like
some, and they don't need story because of the nature of the
game. My all time favourite is The Incredible Machine.

I haven't played many 2d-shooters. I remember one from when
I was young, though, Traffic Department 2192. As the article states,
this game has an awesomely large story. I can't remember
much of it, and I never played the whole game through (my
computer wasn't good enough to run it, so I could only play
it at a mate's), but I remember I enjoyed it.

Fighting games are like car games and sports games and
basically every wii game: It's for drunk people, and thus I
enjoy playing against mates when drunk, but I never play
them when it's only me.

it depends on what 'level' you play 2d fighters on. i only
play them alone when i need to practice moves and combos,
and then once i get those down i never play them alone
again. street fighter 3 is deeper than any ol' car game or
sports game. :(

Oh yeah beack to Bioshock, 2K games had a logo contest and
this came in third place. I guess either they were ignorant
of its roots (I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't pointed
out ot me, really) or they have a great sense of humor.

It's always more fun when you're drunk and just kind of
hammering on it and the guy does some weird move that no-one
expected, and because everyone's drunk, they're all going
"whowhah! did you see that?!?!?"

I haven't played system shock 2, but this game makes me want
to try it out.

It looks really lush. It seems to have all the things I love
from games. And its not an open environment, so I don't have
to worry about it rendering grass. Hopefully the water isn't
as much of a feat.

bioshock will supposedly be having developmental aspects in
terms of the character's abilities, with the player using
plasmids to modify their attributes and abilities. the game
will also have an active and complex ecology of creatures
made to pursue a specific interest and existence, and one
can use to turn enemies against one another or get the drop
on them. say, an enemy is looking for a food source, wait
next to a corpse and crack it in the head, or draw over
another enemy looking for food to the corpse and watch said
enemies duke it out. very interesting, lots of potential if
done properly.

I'll sacrifice framerate for water effects, nothing I love
more than water in videogames. Rain effects and mist and
splashing and realistic flowing and wet surfaces and
OOOOOOOOOHHHHHH gosh the rain in Gears of War made me piss
myself. The environment in Bioshock will be everything to
me.

Yes, I want to have good water effect, I am just hoping it
doesn't tax my computer too much. It won't look good if your
getting three or four frames a second which can happen with
my computer when the games are not set on economy.

I feel the same way, I just learned that my 2.4ghz processor

like I need to upgrade yet again. :/
