I thought John from Cincinnati was going to be a fake show
and we'd get another hour, but apparently not.

If you recall the first episode of this season, Bobby tells
Tony that when you get killed, you never see it coming and
you dont feel a thing. Tony flashes back to this
conversation in the second to last episode, infact its the
last scene before the finale. Thats exactly what happens to
Tony at the end of the finale, the last thing we see is
Tony's daughter scurrying into the diner through his
perspective, then of course without any indication its
lights out, not a sound, nothing...he never saw it coming
from the suspicous guy who entered the bathroom ala The
Godfather.

That's a good theory but who would want Tony killed at that
point?

which episode was the one that ended with the family having
dinner in the new house or something, i though that was the
last episode, but it seems it was a season break, what was
the number of that episode? I would really appriciate if
someone knew.

Sano, i suspect Paulie had already set up Tony, atleast most
clues in the episode seem to point at Paulie double crossing
him.

Yeah Paulie and Tony didn't seem to end up well last time
they showed, I also think Tony's dead why else would they
show a silent black screen? It was one intense build-up
that's for sure.

It was great and poignant. That whole sequence was loaded.
I'm confused as to why there's been so much negative
feedback.

Me too, man. I thought it was great. So tense, but in an
understated way. I loved it. It tied things up in a way
that felt natural and ended it (imo) succinctly.

I think people were after wanton bloodshed. Even my pacifist
aunt seemed really disappointed to not see Tony get
perforated with bullets, James Caan-style.

The gas station scene was enough for me!

Although, I have seen the entire 2nd season, then skipped
right to the season finale

- Just watched it. Certainly the tension grew after that one
guy was shot in the head on the garage forecourt. When Tony
Soprano's son was getting in his B.M.W. I was ½ expecting
it to blow up when he started the engine.

I didn't find the ending made me believe the family got
whacked.

I thought it was a nearly perfect ending. Pretty depressing
when analyzed. Tony's life completely falls apart.

We have:

- Tony about to go to jail because the guy he replaced Vito
with flipped.

- Carmella finally giving in to Tony's way of life and
seemingly appreciating the spoils much more than the risks
as she only appears to care about her lavish lifestyle by
the end. Any moral dilemma's she once had seem gone.

- The crushing of A.J. whom went from trying to break free
from the family only to be railroaded by Carm and Tony. As
soon as they give him his fancy car and new job with Lil'
Carmine, all his ideals went right out the window. Now he's
part of 'the family'

- Meadow following Carmella's, bury your head in ths sand,
lead, gives up her noble pursuit of helping the poor via
medical school, and instead is on her way to becoming a mob
lawyer. She deludes herself into thinking it's necessary to
help prevent the sterotyping and oppresson of Italians. Not
to mention she is engaged to the son of a made man.

- Tony is essentially alone as Paulie is going nuts, Silvio
is in a coma, Junior's lost all memory, Bobby's dead, Chris
is dead, Dr. Melfi is history and Arte has been out of the
picture for awhile.

I think, when in that context, it's a great ending. Tony's
choices, personality and lifestyle destroys both of his
familes. It's shown that no amount of therapy sessions,
philosophy changes, post gunshot epiphanies, peyote trips
or any amount of duck visits, can change him. He is what he
is. Self-centered and depressed. In the end he takes his
whole family down with him.

It was like an allegorical ''hit''. I don't know. And
reading your post reminded me I have to watch some of the
later episodes because I don't even know what happened with
Artie Bucco.

Well, they certainly strong case that Tony was getting hit
and since almost the entire epic was told through his eyes
having the abrupt nothingness was an apt way to end the
narrative of his life... even if they didn't explicitly show
it, they certainly wanted the audience to suspect that he
was likely hit.

In which case, my question could be reworded "who would've
set up the hit"?

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2007-06-21 14:15 [#02095881]

I don't know if the cut to black represented a hit. To me,
it could just as easily signify simply the end of our
privileged voyeuristic view of his world and that WE are the
ones in the black, with the plug suddenly pulled, not Tony
Soprano.

did anyone here read that massive fucking review of the last
episode that was posted on digg a few days ago? the guy was
a massive windbag but he made about 50 interesting
observations.

i doesn't really bother me either way what ultimately
happened to tony. i guess i like the idea that he was
killed because that it is sortof sad and puts a lump in my
throat even though he was basically a scumbag.

either way though, the finale was excellent TV imhotep

Yeah it was a wonderful finale. When I saw it I had no
doubt that he was dead, but it's kind of nice that they
didn't show it or anything so people who were opposed to a
hit can make their own conclusion. I wish the show overall
hadn't gotten so clumsy though. It was such an insanely
amazing show but then they started adding too many dumb
characters and wasting episodes on them...

I agree with herbwest, nobody in the family did the right
thing in the end of it all. Still, you get kind of attached
too all these people after so many years of watching them
that it's a little jarring to have that be the end of it!

*cries*

if the end does mean he's taken out it was alluded to way
before in this season with the hit at which Silvio was
present: that was represented through the viewpoint of this
main charactere as well

it's depressing in any case, tony apparantly being a
psycopath now killing christopher

but it's a morality tale (says imdb). shit leads to more
shit
