sigh, computer

I wanted a quiet computer so got a dell optiplex sx270
which is indeed pretty quiet. The sound had crackly
suckiness due to integrated card or something, so I got a
usb connected sound card instead. Now about once every 4
hours when playing zdoom it gets a blue screen of death
'driver irql not less or equal' mentioning something about
sbusb.sys (which I guess is 'sound blaster' hence the sb).
What a pain; took forever to upload all the crap I need on
this and now it's pretty much useless. If I switch to linux
would all these shit problems go away?

Seems like 90% of problems I've had with computers are due
to drivers.

I would kick them and if they didn't drive anywhere I'd give
up.

If you haven't already, you might want to try reinstalling
the driver for your integrated sound card to see if that
helps. Try this one. Do likewise for your external
soundcard. Best drivers can most likely be found on the
manufacturers website.

Thanks- trying it now (first one was for vista but am trying
r58182 (r62850 says its for nt 4) since i have xp). I
thought maybe the usb just completely overrided the
integrated.. but in device manager I noticed the integrated
driver said it wasn't signed so I uninstalled it. (maybe
leaving the integrated driver uninstalled is all that is
necessary, or maybe I have to install a new driver for it
since I guess I'm not using the integrated one anyway
anymore).
I'll have to test to see if it works by playing doom about 4
hours again, but I was planning to play 500 million hours
anyway... That'll be great if this works.

I think you very well may have fixed it and saved me a huge
time consuming pain. 1 hr of doom playing down.

Uninstall and deactivate internal sound card. It'll
still be around in the settings somewhere.

Whoa, I didn't even notice I'd linked to the Vista driver. I
feel dirty.

i think the blonde actress from the dell ads that followed
the dude ones was named amy leland, but i can't find any
good pics.

she was cute, i thought

..oh, sorry, i dunno about soundcard drivers.

As soon as I did a windows update and got a prompt to
download windows 'genuine advantage' (which I declined), I hated
XP. Now I can't get anymore updates unless I get that. I
probably have genuine windows but suspect it'd be annoying
with popups and all sorts of crap, plus my windows is oem so
don't know if i have to provide some serial number or
something.
I got a creative sound blaster sb0270 or something usb
card.
This avatar does suck but was an experiment to get motion
within motion.

I'll try to uninstall and deactivate the internal sound card
if this driver fails (I guess via the 'uninstall hardware'
icon since I'm not even sure if this case is physically
openable).

You could also try re-installing the internal sound card and
then deactivating it, if that doesn't work...
