Saw this film tonight at a local movie-house. It is directed by David Fincher, Esq, best known as the helmsman of 'Fight Club', the vastly overrated film starring Bradley Pitt and that other fellow.
Anyway, apart from a sagging middle section, I found this film to be fairly engrossing, and attentive.
Main themes: attention-seeking, forensic investigation of a serial killer.

It's not flashy at all... it's a talkie.

that's a shame, then, since i'm a purist who only watches silent films.

"That other fellow" is a very talented actor: Edward Norton.

he's the mark hammill of the modern age: was in a popular film and consequently worshipped by the deluded fans of said film. in reality he can't act his way out of a nutsack, and his mumbling annoys me to no end.

saw this in the theatre, really enjoyed it.
Living in the Bay Area it was awsome to see it represented retroactivley in the movie. San Francisco was basically just as much a character in the film as any of the leads. And theres something about the way the offices for the Chronicle looked that struck a deep chord of nostalgia with me. I mean I was born in '84 but that's still how stuff looked when I was a really little kid.
Good writing and characters as well.

Wow, yeah, that must be awesome.. It was really great period setting, too; nothing overtly stereotyping (see: Forrest Gump) about the period(s) it was set in.

I've never been to San Francisco but I got a real feel for the place, especially the period. Whether it was in any way close to the reality is obviously up to those who know the place to judge.
I thought the film was liberated from having to have the cops nail the killer. Recommmended.

C'mon, he was great in Primal Fear, Rounders and American History X. I think he's made some pretty crap role choices recently though.
