"Growing old is mandatory, growing up is not."
and
"We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old
because we stop playing."
are both maxims I hold to be true.

I have plenty of responsibility, kids are about the only
extra thing I could have to deal with. I wouldn't say I'm
very "grown up" though.

I'm moving to a spread out city. I will not use it on a
regular basis; twice every three weeks or so. In my current
city, which I inhabited for three years, when I had a
girlfriend with a car it did make life funner; lots of new
things to experience.

I like going on hikes for instance, it's nice to be able to
just go directly where you wish.

I used to think cars are an abomination, but having had
access to one a long time changed that.

Rather, I still think they are an abomination, but I'm a bad
person and will accept their perks.

You need someone to punish your bad self!

I'm free thursday at 11pm.

Public transportation not viable?

I should add, I've never 'need'ed a car, however access to
one has proved fun and useful at different times; and in low
density cities with poor public transportation.. even more
so.

NICE AVATAR!!

I'm in a transition phase. Gonna start my PhD in the fall
at UCSD (university of california at san diego); I'm excited
about new environment and opportunities. This summer I have
a shit ton of work to do, and it's pretty exciting. Also, I
recently (well, one month) broke up with my long-time
girlfriend; we really liked each other and it'll cast a
shadow over me for some months yet.

What is your PhD in?

I wish I was good enough to do all that university shit, my
brain doesn't like formality and I get bored too easily.

More girls will comee along and when you're Dr sneakattack
you will find a ton of bitches wanting you for your money
(even if you have none everyone loves a Dr)

we'll see; I don't meet girls and this girl was really
special. Trying to keep my chin up.

It's in computer science. Specifically, machine learning,
which is a subfield of AI (it's generally probabilistic).
It's a new field with lots of change; an exciting and
intense time for it. I'm pretty fortunate to have already
worked with a couple of the top researchers in the field.

Do you still do code for a living?

Also, most people are totally useless during PhD, churning
out derivative work. it's scary to throw yourself into the
dark for five (or whatever) years; I'm worried I lack the
diligence and motivation necessary.

University is a nice escape from reality.

I am acting like a bit of a jack of all trades at the
moment. Most of my work at the moment is in data
warehousing which is completely dull but I was getting tired
of just coding. I am called Mr Business Intelligence which
sort of best sums up my role :(

I will be leaving my current employer in the near future and
am planning on going totally freelance again.

I'd love to get into something like machine learning. I
have developed rudimentary code that learns as it goes along
but it is all very basic. The idea is that eventually it
will seek and evaluate alternative solutions to set business
problem using the data available to it.

Financially speaking, your in a good position. It's too bad
you'll leave your employer, I'm a very nervous person and I
like stability in the larger things in life (like jobs,
relationships.. I'm very NOT stable in small scale stuff).

It's a neat field, but mostly BS right now. People aren't
solving the big problems, just dicking around with problems
that are mostly solved, squeezing better performance out of
them.

I hope that some day I can apply some of the things I know
to make some very, very sweet synthesizer software.

In the past year I have saved my current employer somewhere
in the region of $15 million dollars in process
improvement...what they pay me in comparison (about $100k)
is nothing. I could earn shit loads more working as a field
consultant.

That's always really depressing for me. A few summers ago I
coded in a financial company, and I felt like I was just
locked in a corner, and whatever good I did had the effect
of making a bunch of fuckers in suits even richer; no
positive effect on the world.

A really competent friend is working there now, and it just
seems like a waste of time.

You're in liverpool, right? are there good opportunities?
I guess plenty of people in your position move to london.

offline ecnadniarb on 2007-05-27 16:05 [#02088123]

There isn't much opportunity but I love Liverpool and can't
stand London in general. The good thing is that there isn't
all that much competition for jobs or contracts, plus I
don't mind travelling. It was easier when I didn't have a
long term girlfriends as I would just move to where ever I
was working for a few months and think nothing of it. Now I
try to make sure I can get home as much as possible.

Oh I see; yeah, long term relationships are hard.

Did you ever get to travel outside the UK for your work? I
imagine that could be fun, though stressful.

I just looked at a map; liverpool was farther north than I
had thought, and also on a coast. is it pretty there? I've
seen some wonderful photos of british and irish coasts.

It's hardly noticeable, but the plural s in girlfriends is
in italics.

To emphasize it.

very few people on this planet are grown up. they all seem
to be destroying the planet and don't create nice playing
grounds for kids, then slap them when they get bored, and
expect them to follow their example. how fking grown up is
that?

adults are just older twisted children.
