you can also drag and drop the banks

the creator plans to make 202 and 303 aswell

saving or recording function would be great

Yeah, totally - hopefully they'll add a 303 too, so you can
jam with that - like an online ReBirth.

the bass drum has a decay that's almost 808-like

Agreed. I can't understand why no one has done a really good
202/101 emulator in software yet. A few things (certain
patches in Vaz modular, certain patches in Muon Tau Pro)
come close/overlap the sound palette a bit, but there isn't
really an accurate direct emulation (with all the
limitations of the original) of either.

I am going to say it. The 909 sounds brittle and
characterless. I don't care who wants to set me on fire now.
I have said it.

The 909 in general, or just this emulation of it?

character (plural characters)

1. A being involved in the action of a story.
2. A symbol used to represent a sound or a word.
3. A distinguishing feature; characteristic; A
complex of mental and ethical traits marking a person or a
group.
4. A moral strength.
"You may not like to eat liver," said Calvin's father, "but
it builds character."
5. A person with many notable or eccentric features.
6. (mathematics) A complex number representing an element of
a finite Abelian group.
7. (computing) One of the basic elements making up a text
file or string: a code representing a printing character or
a control character. Synonymous with byte in some
environments.

i, and many others would attest to the generally accepted
belief that the 909 has an unmistakable sound, hence has
character

Ok. Having no character was my nice way of saying it sounds
boring. I like the 808, but the 909 sounds dull and lifeless
in comparison.

oh, i see what you mean now

when i got my 909 i thought it'd be my favorite, but i was
very wrong

the 808 does have much more "juice" to it

i wouldn't say it's sound is dull and lifeless, just that
it's...umm different

i like how the 808 sounds fluid :)

808 > 909

totally

hence my 808 has pride of place in front of me so i can
tweak it in real time, whereas the 909 sits above my amp

oscillik - do you the >£500 + price tag for an 808 and a
>£800 + price tag for a 909 are still justified when for
£100 you can get a Novation Drumstation that sounds almost
identical to both?

The drumstation is sample based, plus isn't as good to
sequence.

It's more than just a dumb set of samples though.

The main argument IMO is the way you interact with the old
boxes and the state of mind you're in when playing with
them. I know I get more enthused when using the 606 than I
do when clicking on a midi drum event on the monitor.

Yes, you can play with filter cutoff and envelopes and
stuff. But still, its a sample. Might as well be using a
sampler by that logic.

offline sheffieldbleep from Sheffield (United Kingdom) on 2007-05-29 04:00 [#02088577]

It samples the original wave forms that construct each
sound. MUCH more than a set of samples with a DCF/A.

offline sheffieldbleep from Sheffield (United Kingdom) on 2007-05-29 04:02 [#02088579]

But my point being £100 or £1500. Is that 'sound' worth
the extra outlay?

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2007-05-29 04:07 [#02088581]

Personally, I would rather have a xbase than either an 808,
909 or drumstation, but oscillik likes having his drum
machines. I understand where he is coming from even though I
don't share the same interest in vintage drum synthesizers.

i personally think that the prices i paid for my gear were
reasonable.
but that's my opinion

i have the stuff i have because i like interacting with it,
as you've already put quite rightly - messing around with
something else doesn't feel right.

not only that but the real things DO really sound different
from samples. every 808 is different. every 909 is
different. every 303, 606, or any other analogue piece of
equipment will always sound different from another (insert
instrument here).

i like my toys :)
