I know this isn't exactly on topic but you guys are the
only people I trust. Can I buy the cheapest Optival Memory
on ebay for my mac pro or will it crash and burn?

Should I buy a more expensive memory that's safer...if so,
what kind?
I want to get like 6gb to upgrade my brand new mac pro!

Thankssss

cheap memory can work just as good, but quality control is
generally better on brand names. the difference is usually
only $10, so..

are you sure? the new mac pro's need FB-DIMM memory.

quote:
Memory
667MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) memory
Eight FB-DIMM slots on two memory riser cards (four slots
per card) supporting up to 16GB of main memory
256-bit-wide memory architecture

Yeah they do, the difference is more than $10.

So I don't know whether to buy that bootleg Optival one on
ebay or whether I should get a known brand name, or which
one for that matter.

Well, if its any consolation, if you end up buying high end
ram on ebay, there is a good chance its just renamed cheap
ram.

When buying ram, you buy the good stuff because you don't
want your ram to end up dying on you when you need it most.
Chances are you will go through a few sticks more of cheap
stuff than stuff that is of higher quality. I wouldn't do it
if I were in your shoes, but I am not going to say either
way otherwise.

I would strongly advise against getting cheapo RAM, but
don't go through Apple either, or you pay WAY too much.

I suggest Crucial Memory.

Two GB costs $699CAD in Canada. I think Crucial has the
sweet spot as far as quality RAM at a reasonable price ($240
for the same).

^^ Clarification: $699 if you buy from Apple.

Thats insane. I don't know how people can think that is a
worthwhile price.

[rant]Apple is a cash cow that feeds off of people need for
an identity. Parasites of the worst kind.[/rant]

Still pretty expensive, I'm still leaning toward the cheapo
stuff on ebay.

If your RAM dies or fails or whatever, does the whole
computer blow up or is it just a matter of it not
recognizing the ram until you get it replaced?

AFAIK, you're looking at symptoms ranging from single bit
errors (which isn't a problem for ECC RAM) to kernal panics,
to severe data corruption

i wouldn't touch crucial with a barge pole. it's kingston or
apple all the way. you spend that much on a machine, why not
spend some money on decent RAM?

if you DO go cheap, make sure to upgrade in pairs and that
the RAM has heat sinks attached, otherwise you'll be in for
some serious RAM board melting shit
