i have these ultra cheap no brand surround speakers for my
dvd player (made in china). Flimsy lightweight things.
Impedance 8 ohms.

Now, i've been given two KEF Cresta Electronics Limited
speakers by my grandma. I've been told this was a really
decent brand in its days. Strangely (or not) the impedance
of these speakers is also 8 ohms.

Can i switch two of the sattelites for these KEFs, or is
there anything other than impedance that matters here?

If you've bought a complete surround speaker set, it's
probably somehow configured so that the speakers compliment
each other, so it isn't necessarily so that replacing two
speakers for two that should somehow be better will lead to
better sound. However, if it's a cheap brand, it could also
not really matter. You'll just have to try it out.

Speakers rarely have more than 8ohm, but make sure the
receiver can give the new speakers enough watt.

you have a point there. Maybe i'll just hook these up to the
stereo to replace my phillips speakers.

yeah, a good stereo setup is way better than a crappy
surround one

Not if what you're after is watching movies with surround
sound...

The surround set actually sounds pretty fab, considering how
little it cost.

My stereo is one of those tuner/double cassette deck/cd
player systems, which i use as an amp for ext. discman/mp3
player/nintendo wii sound. The speakers are absolutely fine
for these purposes now that i think of it.

On the back at the speaker connections it says 'speakers 6
ohms' so i didn't even attempt to connect the other ones.

I'll save the KEFs for a decent standalone amp and the
recordplayer i'm planning to buy.

Cheers though.

it all depends on what you're after, sound quality or
surround sound effect, i would rather enjoy a film with
great sound quality rather than with a bad surround

but it's all good if J198 is happy with the quality of his
surround setup, i didn't hear it after all =)
