I enjoy the making of the melody, the improvisation of it,
more than the relentless tweaking of knobs, and I also
usually know exactly what sound I want. Fortunately,
that sound tends to be quite simple, like a filtered square
with portamento or something, but whenever I have a sound in
mind that I can't for the life of me figure out how to do,
it's just frustrating.

One type of sound I can't seem to do well is the sort of
"piano stab" sound that Luke Vibert uses a lot.

For example, in Stan D'infamy (track 9 from YosepH), at
around 0:50. It sort of sounds like real piano with a quick
decay and no sustain... but not really. Is it FM maybe?

Or maybe the key to the sound is the chords themselves. They
sound odd: not major or minor, but some sort of jazzy chord
or something.

Thats probably a rompler sample, or something from reason.
The most famous synthesizer piano sound is from the korg m1,
and I wouldn't put him past it to have used that.

My advice is to learn your envelopes and modulations (LFO
and such). Without them your sounds will sound very
lifeless. Of course, play with your filters a lot. Try
avoiding added effects until you find yourself happy with
what kinds of raw sounds you can synthesize.

In the end, anybody can make neat sound design. The good
synthesists are those that can recreate the same neat sounds
again and again.

cronox is great. ive got cronox and absynth but cronox is my
go to for really warped basses from samples of simple sines
etc. and the automation is easy unlike absynth.

Number TWO:

The "Analord Bass".

This one is easy to do and sounds rather splendid. Two
methods. Both use sync. On my synth it works as sync 2->1,
so that's how you should set yours, or swap the settings for
the VCOs.

Method 1: Simple pulsewidth type patch:
VCO1 square or pulse width pitch= C0
VCO2 sawtooth pitch= C1

Filter:
Set 4 pole low pass
cutoff about 30%
resonance about 40%

Amp envelope:
attack 0%, decay about 30-40%, same for sustain, release
<5%

Use a small amount of LFO modulation on each VCO to detune,
i.e. Set LFO1 to modify VCO1 pitch and LFO2 for VCO2. Use a
low amount of LFO and quite lowish frequencies. Make the LFO
frequencies different on both LFOs. Use your ears to get the
oscillators sounding less static and a bit "fuzzy".

This one is a great bass.

Method 2:
VCO1 sawtooth. pitch= C0
VCO2 sawtooth pitch = G3

Filter:
Set 4 pole low pass
cutoff to about 30%
resonance about 25%.

Amp envelope:
Set attack to <5%, decay about 60ish%, sustain 0%, release
about half for now.

Set a small amount of LFO modulation onto each VCO to
simulate detune, set the LFOs to a lowish frequency.

Transpose the whole instrument down by an octave and add a
small amount of distortion on the output to breathe life
into the patch.

This one can be used as more of a lead bass and you can open
up the filter a bit and drive it through the distortion to
get a growling lead/bass sound.

Hope this makes sense and leads you to some excellent
sounds!
Expect tip number 3 in a few days :)

Awesome! I'll give it a shot, even though I don't really
know what the analord bass is supposed to sound like. I
guess I'll find out when I've finished.

I think I got the first one right, but the second one.. if I
set the low pass filter to 30% of full value, I don't get
much sound...

you may need to open up the filter a bit. Those settings are
for my situation with a distortion unit on the output
generating some nice harmonics.

OK - sound sample is fantastic!

Hahah, if that sample is fantastic, I've done something
wrong 'cause mine sounds nothing like that! When you say C0
and G3, I assumed you were referring to notes, so I offset
the pitch of the second sound by as many halfnotes as the
offset from C0 (though not absolute C0, just the starting
note) to G3 would be. However, the sound did indeed come out
a bit boc-ish for me too... it's very dirty and stuff...

i did the same thing. in the sample i'm opening the filter
bit by bit, at first it doesn't make that much sound like
you said.

haha, this is what it now sounds like. I
disregarded the volume envelope stuff because it sounded
better like this, but this isn't the same synth sound.

Could be because of the distortion... it's the synth
built-in distortion, and it's made to emulate different
types of amps... The sound can be put to use somewhere
somehow, though, maybe, some time...

Does anyone know how one makes that midi bass-ish sound? I
connect it with the music in Transport Tycoon... It's hard
to describe it properly, but it's utterly utterly cheesy,
and it doesn't really have much bass for being a bass sound,
but it still retains a sort of funkiness.

i dunno maybe just a single oscilator, a simple waveform and
a lowpass filter.

FM in better detail but I would prefer my brain nice and
unfried thank you.

changes a bit as it is pitched.. probably some keyfollow on
something.

plus I don't know of any songs where it is "pure."

The sound can sometimes be somewhat like a jaw harp.

Have you taken a spin on a TX81z? They are chock full of
sounds like that. And they go for about $60.

Unfortunately, I don't have $60 to spend. At least not until
after the summer, but there are other things I'm going to be
getting then, more essential things (for other stuff than
music).

here.. I recorded a bit of transport tycoons
soundtrack. It's not the bass sound in the track as such,
but rather that weird thing going "duu-du da-dudu"

It's there throughout the sample and doesn't really change
its pattern. That's the closest I could get to the sound I'm
thinking of, but the one I'm thinking of also has more
dynamics. The "trumpet" overlays part of it at one point...

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2007-05-29 04:14 [#02088589]

Yes. That is an electric piano made with fm, like a TX81z or
a DX7. Its much more complicated than explaining how to set
your certain envelope and filter and oscillator wave shape.
That is a number of operators interacting mathematically.
Its a totally different kind of synthesis than subtractive,
and can easily eat your brain for breakfast if you spend to
much time working with it.

That said, download FM7 or FM8, and browse the electric
piano presets. You should find something to suit your
tastes.

My TX81z makes loads of sounds like that. If I feel unlazy
in the near future, I might make you a sample map of some
form or another.

I have bee spending less time hiding from life in my little
hole lately. The chance of me feeling less lazy is much
higher than it used to be.

possible...
