No. Mostly beacause of the bad relation between Opera and worker's movements.

No. I've been to stage plays with lots of singing, but never proper Operas. I don't really like the music, but I suppose I should go once, maybe it's one of those things like theatre that you have to be there to "get it"?

The Opera was sustained mostly by the burguesy, who where the only social class who could afford to go there (while workers couldn't afford nothing).
It was a common place for anarchysts to attack with home made bombs.
And stuff like that....

That was how artists survived back then.

Not all of them... but I see what u mean. Been that way for art and artists many times.
But... at the time Opera was at it's top, the situation was very very politized.

Yes. Unfortunately artists have and always will have to live outside of society but alongside it to be part of it. A society needs to support its artists if it is to be able to remember its past.

And the working class have never really been capable of supporting the artists. At least until recently. Now a good portion of our worlds artists are supported mostly by the working class.

Yes, but now most profits go to the same burguesy that now controls the media. And the media tell to people what artist they should support. So, one way or another...

Here is where I disagree with you. Yes, the money goes towards the rich upper class, but I feel the public controls media much more than the other way around. The media just gives people what they want. Take music for example. Its not that the media just gives people shitty music to enjoy. Its that people choose shitty music to listen to.
The media spent a little while trying to control trends. They are experiencing a backlash of sorts. That is why they are having such a difficult time with P2P. Because the public is telling them "we are willing to like this and this, but not this, so we won't pay for that". The media is having a hard time relinquishing that control, so they are having fits. The media will circum to the machine eventually, because its a side effect of civilization, not a control element.

Yes. They cater to what the public wants. If the media tries to give the public something it doesn't want, the public rejects it. That said, the media does have a tenancy to pander to the lowest common denominator, because it captures the largest audience. People just naturally have bad taste. Its why democracy will never work.

I've never been able to connect with operatic works. Most kinds of music have pieces within them that can do something for me, but opera on the whole just leaves me flat, which is strange considering how overboard and bombastic it can be.
