Neu!

offline Sclah from Freudian Slipmat on 2007-05-06 13:59 [#02079984]
Points: 3121 Status: Lurker

Pioneering instrumental rock which later came to be known
as "kraut rock". Songs ranging from the most blissful, epic,
ethereal to experimental musique concrete-ish reworkings.
Their best songs are some of the best music I listen to.
They released three albums during their original life span -
Neu!, Neu! 2 and Neu! 75 - all of them are recommended.

This is an appreciation thread

start with Neu! then go to Neu! 2 then Neu! 75. in that
order. it makes sense. they're really amazing.

first of all, comparing EN [experimental music ?] to Neu!
[kraut rock ?] is kind of strange, but.....well

come on EN don't have just a experimental face. i was
thinking about their more melodic works.

but actually i might be wrong if what i'm thinking about is
really considered being "kraut-rock"

okay i haven't found any source that would link EN to
krautrock

krautrock is almost the most important genre there is.

Neu have never really done it for me. i like Zuckerzeit era
Cluster and Harmonia a lot more.

but as far as kraut rock goes, Can blows everything else 15
storeys out of the water. unfortunately. it's a tease,
y'know?

This came out in 98 as a tribute to Neu!
Features: Rother, Autechre, Download, DVOA, Pink Dots, James
Plotkin and others doing versions of Neu! tracks.

Mark Spybey (DVOA. Reformed Faction, Download et al) was
also a member of Sofortkontakt!, which was Michael Karoli of
Can's late project before he died in 2001.

I never heard anything by that project. Just read about it
in Spybey's blogs and Can related sites. I had a little
more luck finding references when I searched for Michael
Karoli.

Yea I remember liking the Autechre track on there. I need
to give the whole thing another listen.

ihave to agree with QRDL, ive never found the appeal of NEu
they always sounded to me like a very cheesy kraftwerky
version of the kraut rock i had grown to love.

im not big into neu (yet) either...can and cluster on the
other hand...i love those..and popol vuh..and a bunch of
other krautrockers.

Schal, isnt that Autechre 'remix' actually a cover of that
song and completely made from scratch or is it a literally a
remix?
i was under the impression it was a cover, but i could be
wrong

If you can find the ealy concerts of Neu with ralph and
Florian playing you'll be converted straight away. I tried
to find it on this computer but it's not there. There's ana
amazing live set that starts with a few synths that sound
like a cross between vowels and raw synths.

I don't know. It's not actually called a "remix" anywhere,
so it could might as well be a cover.

i'll have a look..i imagine it must have been something
closer to harmonia and i like them quite a bit..

offline rad smiles on 2008-02-10 12:08 [#02173635]

its more like what youd think of as neu! than kraftwerk or
harmonia. instrumental jamming, etc.

i see...it's weird really..i normally like that sort of
disharmonic harmonies, but neu just seem so very detached of
(pleasurable) emotions..and i imagine synths add something
on that end..i hope i can find it

so now that were on the subject of kraut rock what are some
other good or memorable bands from the Faust/Can/Neu era? Im
not too familiar with the genre. People have recommended to
me 'this heat' and hawkind but the stuff ive heard by them
hasnt gotten me in the mood really

offline QRDL from Poland on 2008-02-10 14:23 [#02173667]

I just find them more predictable than Can and Faust. I've
got oversaturated with music similar to Neu! in high-school.
Granted it was from the 90s and it shouldn't prejudice me
against the grandpas of noise-rock, but it was still very
alike and I just can listen to Neu! without those
connotations.

oooh amon duul and ash ra temple i have heard of both of

ambient stuff, not their rock any particular albums i should
hear?
