Decent Software Synths?

What do you lot think/use/like?

I've had the Korg legacy collection for some time and IMO
it's excellent. + the MS-20 midi controller gets you
interested and twiddling!

As far as native instruments is concerned, Massive is the
shit. The unfiltered basic oscillator types sound very close
to analogue, and the modulation settings are fantastic. The
filters still sound too much like software synthesizers
unfortunately. I have yet to find a software filter that
sounds anywhere within the same country as my Frostwave
Resonator or my Moog LP filter.

i havent touched any soft synths since i got my nord
micromod, though before i got it i was using FM8 quite a bit

Operator is my favourite probably, I use it in almost
everything.
Pro-53
FM7
Arturia Minimoog and Moog Modular (and most of their other
stuff really) are great.

Also very good some synths from the Creamware plataform, but
they only work on their hardware, so...

Absynth is incredibly versatile. A lot of people think it's
only for long evolving pads, but you can use it for most
things. It's probably my favourite overall.

Z3ta+ is similarly good.

Massive is superb, probably my favourite virtual analogue
synth.

Reason's subtractor is one of my favourite basic synths.
With a few FX and a bit of automation of parameters, you can
get suprisingly good results from it. It's nice for making
analogue drum sounds too.

"The filters still sound too much like software synthesizers

is this really a problem or just a preference?

also I use axs for windows, an old dos synth but you'd be
suprised how good it can sound,

Well, its a problem for me. Seeing as the topic is a
suggestions thread, I think we can take for granted that
every single suggestion here is going to be a preference. A
better question would be why do I not prefer the sound of
software synthesizers? And my answer would be they are too
crisp, perfect, skinny, boring. All software filters kind of
sound the same, only real difference being warmth. In most
of the analogue filters I have used, you can really tell the
difference between them. They have their own signature. Most
software sounds the same. That said, for some reasons 303
emulators seem to have an extremely characteristic sound to
their filters, so they are usually OK by me.

Talking of filters, I found with the KLC that the filter on
the MS-20 remained very accurate even under heavy resonance.
There is none of that nasty digital stepping you often hear
in a poor soft synth.

I fucking love the Legacy. I get lost with the MS20
controller, I love it when the machine takes over the
performer in that way.

Do some experiments with SynthEdit, you can make some pretty
top notch stuff if you have a look round for homebrew
modules/add ons.

lfo-age on the wave selection and then pitch down. lots of
lurvly quips and qurkleydoodoos there.

- Korg Legacy collection - Legacy Cell is probably my
favourite at the moment.

- Pro 52 : not bad, but kinda put in the shade by Legacy
Cell - sounds much thinner and flimsy in comparison.

- Edirol Orchestra & Hyper Canvas

- Space synthesizer

- Rainbow Synth

- B4 (ace organ vsti)

- Juno X2

- Mercury

- Muon Electron

- Slayer 2 (mainly just used it for FX)

- String Studio

- The tb set of vst

- Tritium bass

- the Krakli set of VST (pretty good!)

i am absolutely in love with absynth, the total versatility
you can have with it... start out somewhere and end up
somewhere you thought this little soft synth would never in
a gazillion years be able to achieve... absynth does it in
like 2 minutes. only if you know how to operate it... i
think it takes some getting used to.

Does anyone have this problem with the Korg collection in
Fruityloops - the 1st note in the piano roll does not play
(literally the first note - if it comes in, for instance, on
the 2nd beat it plays fine). If I import as a wav file, I
have to shift it to the right so I have the first note.

Hmm, I do have Ableton but it seems like such an ordeal to
go thru, and I imagine it puts extra pressure on my CPU?

the legacy pack runs a LOT smoother thru ableton. for me at
least anyway. i was suprised by this. when i use the 5th
preset thing it crackles and distorts thru FL. it doesn't
when i use ableton. it's not a very scientific approach
but....

Oh that sounds pretty cool, actually - cos I have sometimes
noticed crackles etc - thanks for the tip :] Do I load FL
into Ableton as a VSTi?

you could maybe route it via ReWire, assuming that FL allows
that, i havent used it since 1.74

I don't use soft synths. i do occasionally use vst fx on
sounds. The way I operate is almost all sample based, so I
will sample a synth more often than not.
I'm very much into musique concrete style found sounds,
which I sometimes do FFT trickery and things with the
computer, which is not possible with analogue means.
I mostly use the computer for cooledit waveform precision
editing and using recycle to slice loops before sending to
the sampler.

I do sometimes mess around with a very old version of
reaktor and generator, but again this will be sampled into
my akai.

My very old (1997ish I think) reaktor and generator are
absolutely fantastic. You can accurately model a lot of the
nuances of analogue gear by summing the CV lines with noise
sources and tiny amounts of LFO, etc
Shove it through some outboard fx and onto 4 track and it
can sound rather splendid. I guess it isn't everyones cup of
tea, because you have to have quite a knowledge of synthesis
and some time to build up a decent sounding synth.

Speaking of which, I may be building an analogue synth from
scratch to my own design in "real" components over the
summer. Keep you eyes peeled for an exciting zilty topic if
I get round to it.

so it started it up.

i never got chance to mess around with too many modern soft
synths back when i was software based, but i really liked
Operator in Ableton Live - i'd never really messed about
with FM synthesis before, and i liked the interface on it.
not to mention the sounds were pretty nifty.

i liked pretty much all of the Arturia soft synths, but i
mainly used Reason back then.

I do like Operator. The fact that you can use it as both
verstile FM and normal subtractive set ups is very good.
Also, 4 oscs is great.

ive used all of the above quite a bit, but the ones i like
the most are, for abstract/fx: massive, reaktor, absynth .
for more unprocessed melody/beat stuff: minimonsta,
hypersonic (haha) helix, z3ta, predator, blue..

i have maybe a total of 100 vst synths though, and i use
them all randomly really..

besides the obvious native instruments synths i highly
recommend:

vaz modular - and absolutely rare but totally awesome
modular synth which i use a lot. it's lightweight for the
cpu and has some really powerful sounds.

z3ta+ - 90 % percent of the basslines you hear in your
favourite dubstep tracks are made with it. pendulum makes
all his sounds on it. it rocks.

korg ms-20 - i use it in nearly every track for making
basslines, sometimes i just add it to a bassline made with
anouther synth - it's in my opinion the most analogue
sounding synth out there.

siac (synth in a box) ensemble for reaktor 5 (from the ni
page) - jesus the guy who made this is a freak - this synth
sounds so raw and ugly i can use it for hours.
