louis theroux appreciation thread

the past couple of days i've been watching louie theroux's
weird weekends - and i have nothing but good words for that
guy. a clever interviewer who is extremely sharp - he manage
to get under the skin nearly every time.

which one of his weird weekends episode is your favourite? i
think mine is either "the most hated family in america" or
"wrestling".

well, this is an appreciation thread, not "just" a thread
about him.

favourites - neo-nazis, most hated family, or thai brides.

he's great.

i've exhausted my collection of weird weekends though, so no
more theroux to distract me from the coming exams

i watched one of the dvds the other day incedently, my fav
so far has to be the africa one, in fact all are great, i
love the way he forms these bizarre bonds with the people he
is documenting,

utter genius so he is, he can expose most sub cultures as a
pure sham

I think he's brilliant - so funny. The only one that
disappointed me was the Black Nationalists one - because I
felt he kept asking stupid questions that played into their
hands. It didn't offer any real insight because of it and he
looked intimidated.

Otherwise, generally excellent - I hope there's more to
come.

its bound to happen really, with that style it cant go right
every time.. eventhough i must say, he is usually incredibly
sharp.

Yep, that's right Marlowe.

What I do like about him is how he gives his subjects just
about enough rope to hang themselves. These people he
interviews are so ignorant, if he pushes too hard they'll
kick him out - so he's extremely amenable and clever in that
respect.

got to say tho, didn't find the philly one telling me
anything i didn't pick up from training day/every film ever
with a gansta rap soundtrack. louie didn't ask very good
questions imo. btw didn't you think some of the ambient
soundtrack to this one was quite nice?

It was brilliant, a genuinely objective view of the
situation. He managed to show the problems from both sides
never criticising either but ultimately left the viewer with
the chance to make their own mind up with major faults in
both the police and the citizens highlighted.

It was an eye opener in the respect that you could tell that
everything was operated on the most frigile state of
equalibrium and it was something understood within the
fabric of the community.

Louis is the king of probing yet non judgemental
questioning.

Next week's looks just as good.

It was Boards of Canada.

btw, I disagree about the questioning...he had to tread a
very thin line as the police would have just refused to take
him out if he appeared critical of them and the residents
were quite clearly nervous of potential repercussions.
Given the sensitivity of it all I think he handled it
expertly.

i need to listen to more music.

hmm. but he repeated questions and i didn't find myself
thinking 'i never knew that' or 'that's interesting'. the
god hates fags one was excellent cos he used his britishness
perfectly; charming and deceptively naive whilst poking at
them until they said things that really laid them open. he
is a great guy but just didn't use his talents on this one
imo

He looked really nervous through a lot of it. I think
because it was a look at 'real life' it was never going to
be the same as the wierd weekends. I actually found a lot of
the police responses very interesting. You can see most of
them viewed themselves as far superior to the residents and
ther ultimate goal is not freedom and liberty but the
establishment of a police state.

haha they weren't going to do it overtly on camera for the
BBC now were they!

The young white uniformed officer had a particular attitude,
as did the members of the 'elite' squad. The Chuck Norris
wannabe "Hunter" was as dodgy as fuck, reminded me of a
character from a film years ago.

I am also a big fan, I think he plays stupid incredibly well
and it pays off very effectively.

Which Boards of Canada songs were in the Philadelphia
documentary?

Also, I think his style was influenced by Nick Broomfield,
who's documentaries are equally amazing (Biggie & Tupac,
Eileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, etc) so I
recommend you check them out too.

i just watched the most hated family in america
and it is a little odd
the way he tries to bring his subjects to his point of view
instead of trying to really talk and understand
it's kind of condescending, and i don't think a filmmaker
should assume his subject is wrong
but it's kind of cute, and it's interesting

i've seen some other stuff and it was very good, though
the thai bride thing was great
i need to see more

If I remember properly he seemed to be on his own little
mission to 'save' the teenage girls and children in the
hated family one? Interesting but not one of my favourites I
have to admit.

well he thinks that headguy is just ill with this
hatedisease. not many others are going to try and save the
girls, so he feels it's his duty as a compassionate human
being to do this.

imo it's not forbidden for a documentary maker to have an
opinion and out it.

i think he's very sweet and it's funny he seeks out these
kind of people therefor

online dariusgriffin from cool on 2008-12-06 13:36 [#02257448]

i said it wrong, it's perfectly okay for him to express his
opinion
in fact it's better, more honest
but trying to convert his subjects to his point of view is
kind of lame
we know they're wrong, we know they're hated, and he doesn't
need to add to this

there's a scene in particular where he doesn't understand
what is being filmed
when someone throws a cup at a kid protester
in a voiceover, he says something very trite, to the effect
of
"this reminded me that the victims of the church are also
their own children"
so, bleh,
it's not just the children, it's horrible for everyone
and he kind of ruined the images

I sent some links to my friends and besides a "haha" at the
gangsta rap one, all I got was angry responses. My ex-girl
said that Louis is evil and psychopatic and that he enjoys
hitting where it hurts. My brother said the same. I don't
know what to think now, I honestly thought that Louis
couldn't have been more humanistic in his approach if he
didn't want to sacrifice showing a significant part of the
picture.
I blame the guy with a jar for desensitizing me.

in the most hated family one i don't think he was
unprofessional, he got answers out of those girls. one of
them had doubts and i think he was interested in that. it
was some of his best work.
the philly one was a bit crap. i don't know why people felt
it was hard hitting ect. also the police were not trying to
bully or enforce themselves for the sake of power. they were
everything i'd expected; weary, frustrated, disheartened,
but ultimately good people (even that one that was like jack
scagnetti from natural born killers!)
the joburg one was brilliant. louie's technique was better,
the subject was far more interesting and surprising (louie
seemed much more in his element here). there were so many
great bits like that badboyz firm, that bit when they went
mental on that guy and pepper sprayed eachother
(that's extreme police). that massive mob who wanted
to BURN that man (he was sooo african).

anyway there were so many great bits that were really
interesting to see. i felt like this doc had a lot more to
think about than the philly one. watch it.
