your thoughts on recent albums you've listened to

blonde redhead - 23
so far so good. moody and atmospheric indie rock without
that emo bullshit.

do make say think - you, you're a history in rust
it's still growing on me. i was kind of disappointed at
first because it's not as epic as previous albums, but it's
good.

jasper tx - a darkness
a bit of a letdown i think. half of the record is decent
ambient/drone, the other half is cheese.

aidan baker - the sea swells a bit...
good, real good.

gareth s. brown - iron henry
similar in style to yann tiersen. would make a great
soundtrack to a quirky french movie.

bracken - we know about the need
i expected too much from this album. it could have been
great, but whatever.

of montreal - hissing fauna, are you the destroyer?
i love some tracks, but others are painful to listen to.
like most hyped up indie rock albums, wears thin pretty
quickly.

Mono - Travels In Constants Vol 22 : - The Phoenix Tree
-
Standard mono formula (aka tease you, build it up, then wham
it down your throat), but one which works beautifully.
Pretty epic in places (the end of "Gone" almost blew me out
of my seat when I first heard it), this really is fantastic
instrumental/post-rock.

Front Line Assembly - Tactical Neural Implant
-
FLA are seen as a second-rate Skinny Puppy by some, but I
always enjoyed their sound. EBM with funk and even a "Set Up
System" sample is thrown in for good measure. My favourite
track is "The Blade", purely for that fantastic bassline.

Dynarec - Lagomorph
-
Dynarec is one of my favourite electro producers at the
moment and this 12" delivers on all fronts. Funky rhythms
and great melodies. Clearly inspired by Dopplereffekt in
places, but it is done so tastefully. I love it.

Frank Sinatra - In The Wee Small Hours

A set of nice melancholy songs from Mr Sinatra. I predict
big thinks for young blue eyes.

i'll have to check that mono. of all the mogwai copycats out
there i like mono the best. i heard the split disc with
world's end girlfriend is quite good too. which brings me
to...

explosions in the sky - all of a sudden i miss everyone
kind of shit. not that i was expecting greatness, but i'm
kind of over their sound. they can be too dramatic at times.
i prefer post-rock of the more subtle variety.

Bitstream - One Third Standard Lux
Not as good as Domestic Economy, probably because this is a
compilation so doesn't work as an album as well, but really
good tracks! Loving the Ligeti samples

Robert Logan - Cognessence
Wooo, love it. Speechless.

Venetian Snares- Pink + Green (released 07)-

Gay ass album title. The first track was good.. (or more
specifically, it has this one sound I like.) The rest of the
tracks are garbage, AGAIN.

Kool Keith- The Comi$$ioner 2 (released late 06.)-

This might be Kool Keith's most demented release yet. He's
not even trying at ALL anymore, and that's why it's awsome.
It makes no sense at all. I can't stop listening to it.
Listen to the track "The Caribbean" and you'll see what I'm
talking about.

oh yeah I checked out that new Stars of the Lid too... It's
kinda boring but it has a few good tracks such as "The
Daughters Of Quiet Minds" and "Tippy's Demise."

More or less it's the same shit for 2 hours though (double
cd)

1) fennesz sakamoto - cendre: nice one.
2) fennesz, o'rourke, rehberg - the return of fenn o'berg:
liked it better than at first, heard a sample of Yellow
Magic Orchestra "fireckracker", tried to add a comment about
this on discogs, learned that sample trivia is not
accepted.
3) apparat - walls: haven't been a fan and still am not.
4) hector zazou - strong currents: first track and some in
the middle are good. all are good, it is Hector Zazou, but
those i said are easier to dig.
5) hector zazou - geographies: Vera C. is a very good song,
except for that guitar sound.
6) to rococo rot - koelner brett: nice one.
7) to rococo rot - eisfeld: too ambient
8) pan•american / to rococo rot - split: nice
9) to rococo rot - veiculo: better on speakers, than in
headphones (applies to all TRR)
10) vinkeloe / cremaschi / masaoka / robair - klang. farben.
melodie: also better on speakers. and loud. but it's a waste
of time to listen to free improvisation more than once,
better to get some more free improv music and listen it for
one time only each.
11) shilkloper / volkov / starostin - XXIV or whatever: not
groovy except for one track.

if you like to rococo rot, Matvey
i strongly recommend Kreidler's magnificent
"appearance and the park" and the even more magnificent
"weekend"

i'll try that. It is Schneider's group, isn't it?

that seems to be the general consensus. i was going to pick
that record up, but i passed on it.

Venetian Snares - Pink and Green

I like the first track only because i like the vocal sample,
and the third track, but those two has already gone thin for
me. The rest has been shite since i first put it on.

Ceephax Acid Crew - Acid Travelator (Funbox001)

I can't get enough of this one, and the Acid Quiff side is
also growing on me more and more.

The Avalanches - Since I Left You

What more can i say? After hearing it atleast a 100 times in
a row basicly, it still doesn't bore me at all. I like this
one alot.

Genetic World - Telepopmusic

They should've left the shitty rap tracks out, they are
completely tasteless.

Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere

Hahahahaha oh man, why.

that's about it i think

*Hannu - Worms in my piano
Beautiful experimantal piano music. Gives me some of the
same feeling as Deaf Center. City Centre Offices couldn't
release bad music if they tried to.

*Springintgut - Park and Ride
Another CCo-favorite. More playful and danceable than most
of the other stuff on the label. This is happy music.

*Springintgut - Posten 90
Had to check out his other record, and this is also
recommended. Melodic, happy.

*Aleksi Pärala - Project V
Nice record. Certainly not a top-10 record this year,
but...nice

* Of montreal - hissing fauna, are you the destroyer?
Varies from excellent to terrible. "The past is a grotesque
animal" is maybe my favorite track atm.

Hmm, I'll have to check the other Springintgut record. Very
much like Park And Ride.

I do mini-reviews of stuff I like each month here,
but in terms of other stuff not listed:

Gui Boratto, Chromophobia - Great second half to this
record. Kompakt has surprised me so far this year with
quality techno tunage.

Thee Stranded Horse, Churning Strides - Side project of
Encre with some singer. The vocals annoy me, but I really
like the acoustic guitar work.

Takeshi Nishimoto, Monologue - Super minimal/quiet guitar
stuff. I think I need a different setting than the train
ride to work to enjoy it.

Victor Bermon, Arriving At Night - Only given one listen,
but very nice stuff from Hefty. Kind of what you'd expect
Prefuse to sample in his records.

Apparat, Walls - He's still doing the vocal stuff a lot, but
it sounds so much better than that pussy Morr Music shit.
Apparat never seems to miss for me. Great stuff.

Battles, Mirrored - It's okay but I feel they could be doing
more. Atlas is strangely addicting though.

dave stapleton - sleek arm 35 drive
disc is fucking gold, mine is a promo copy. tracks frozen
rope, ghandis glock, hose filled with sand, and backpack
harbinger are where idm should be headed.

cco has been one of my favorite labels for years. the
offshoot label büro is just as good in my opinion. i listen
to the gentlemen losers s/t album very frequently.

I've noticed that CCO has that sublabel, but never checked
it out. Gonna listen to TGL. Thanks for the tip!

Marlowe: I have absolutely no idea. It just sounds great

ok here you are

dj distance- my demons (planet mu): I really like dubstep
stuff and this album is a good starting point; not at the
same level of kode9&spaceape or skream album, so: 7/10

kaiser chiefs- yours truly angry mob: listened to it because
a friend wanted to a part from Ruby which is nice (not the
words of course) the rest is tedious and without ideas
sounds all the same not my genre: 5.5/10

amon tobin-foley room: one great return amazing stuff, not
equal to permutation or bricolage but it's boring being
always perfect 8.5/10

mira calix-eyes set againt the sun: i was quite disappointed
about the previous skimkitta, ihad no great expectations for
this, but i was wrong it's definetly better, great sounds,
love Protean 7.5/10

bjork-volta: ok i love her so my opinion is not relevant
8.5/10
but i think it deserves more than this.best of 2007 so far

klaxons-myths of the near future: great band and great
album. i love atlantis to interzone. different music to hear
finally. But where is the nu rave?? 8.5/10

second part:

maximo park-our earthly pleasure: ok, first i know them
because they are on warp, otherwise i woudn't consider them;
second thing: why not buying battles or !!! instead? both
are far better. I don't understand people choices. I hope
warp will use MP success to release albums that really count
like clark autechre and boc. 6/10

cocorosie-the adventure of ghosthorse and stillborn: pretty
tidious this thing of "wannabe bjork". Cocorosie continue to
write songs as if the came from Iceland and all those things
but no one can teach talent. anayway not a bad record but
not a record of the year as well 7/10

cornelius - sensous: probably the most talented japanese
artist he's really good in what he does, that means four
tet+beck stuff (not completely true I Know); Fantasma is
still my fav, this is kind like previous Point 8/10

sorry now i spoke only of recent released records, and you
asked recent listened album so i add one more

future sound of london-the isness: ok this is a masterpiece,
a great timeless record; nothing in previous FSOL step to
this; really mind blowing 9.5/10
