Why do people buy bottled water?

I've never understood.

where i stand

My boyfriend and I buy it because he works on construction
sites where there is no running water. I drink from the tap.

Some people buy it because their tapwater is not drinkable
(for example in my city we had a problem with manganese for
a while a year or two ago), or they have rusty old pipes
(though the smart thing to do in this situation would be to
order subscription water service).

what ol' mimi said.

Some do it 'coz they are misled though, of course. i heard
Evian is quite a big lie for example, but on the other hand
a lot of natural water sources differ in their composition.
for example the PH value is something that varies an awful
lot, mont roucous (hehe) is a good one on the PH scale. i
sometimes buy Vichy celestins for it's salty taste though it
has quite a lot of fluoride, wich is another redrum thread
all together. there's a natural source near where i live,
kind of a secret, tiny, it's great. back in london i didn't
trust my tap much, like it was linked directly to the local
swimming baths.

In Canada we can drink our tap water but many of us filter
it, pour it into fancy bottles and drink it with pretend
mouths.

I buy Evian for drinking but a Portuguese brand called Luso
for my hair.

i cant speak for anyone else but in the uk the attitude to
bottled water is crazy. we live in one of the most developed
countries in the world and we think our water supply isnt
fit to drink. damn, there are people drinking raw sewage in
parts of the world and people get funny about turning on the
tap. IIRC tap water costs about 0.07p/litre.

FACTS ABOUT BOTTLED WATER

IT DOESNT TASTE NICER

IT ISNT BETTER FOR YOU

IT DOESNT
EXFOLIATE/REVITALISE/REPLENISH/CLEANSE/PURIFY/HYDRATE ANY
MORE THAN TAP WATER.

IT IS A STUPID LABEL THAT YOU'RE PISSING YOUR MONEY AWAY ON

DRINKING BOTTLED WATER DOESNT MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON

IF YOU STILL THINK IT TASTES NICER ITS PROBABLY BECAUSE ITS
COLDER. PUT A GLASS OF TAP WATER IN THE FRIDGE FOR AN HOUR.
REFRESHING ISNT IT?

IT PROBABLY CAME OUT OF A TAP ITSELF ANYWAY.

all water comes out of some kind of tap. those bottled
waters can sit on the shelf for up to 2 years before getting
to shops. i know theyre sealed but still, its a bit nasty. i
never buy bottled water unless im out at a club, im fucked
and theyve turned the cold water off (a regular occurance
round here).

also bottles water is all like "oh its taken millions of
years to pass through layers of metapmorphic rocks and
filter through minerals" and then on the bottle it says 'USE
BY END OF MAY'

rule of thumb

if its not harming you,
its not harming someone else,
and it is perhaps even beneficial

it cant be a bad thing

I buy it every now and then because it is convenient to be
able to take a bottle with me when I go out so I can keep
hydrated when I'm not near a tap. Once I've finished the
bottle though I don't throw it away, as I've seen that YOU
do. :D I fill it up again with tap water and stick it in the
fridge so that I can re-use it or recycle it.
When I go out and buy food I quite often buy bottled water
instead of a bottle of coke or something because I prefer
the taste, it's healthier and I'd be buying a bottle anyway.

Thing is, though, depending on what type of bottled water
you buy, where it's from, and where you live, it could
indeed be harming someone. First of all, it has to be
transported, so if you're in Australia buying bottled water
from Norway, that means it's been on a huge polluting ship
(or plane) to get there.

I sometimes buy bottled water, but then mostly with bubbles
added. If I buy plain bottled water, I always buy Norwegian,
and it's only in cases where I'm, like, going to climb a
mountain or something, and need something to drink.

Bottled water does often contain more minerals, etc,
and it hasn't been bleached with chlorine or added fluoride
like tap water.

Plus, if you've ever tasted water straight from the
glacier.. it tastes WAAAY better than tap water.

I used to buy bottled mineral water because our tap water
infrastructure here isn't as healthy. While the Israeli
filtration structures are pretty good, they add chlorine and
other nasty stuff into the tap water in order to "clean" it.
Therefore, I prefer to drink cleaner water.
A year and half ago we just purchased a filter unit with UV
light in it and there is no more use in bottled water for
me, except when I'm away from home and there is no clean
water to drink anywhere close.

for sure, i couldnt rationalise buying bottled water from
norway. that scenario brings up a different issue
altogether. there are all kinds of commodoties imported by
countries that have their sufficient means to produce them.

Duh! I buy bottled water because The Illuminati and its
various co-conspirators put mind-altering chemicals in the
tap water, which allows them to control our every action.
Come on guys, everyone knows this. Fight the power! Drink
bottled water, fresh from the French alps!

bottled water is a must here in stettin because the taped
water is very bad.

but i use britta water filters for that - gets much cheaper
with the time and the water from it is very good.

I'll take you glacierwalking if you come to Norway before
the rest of our glaciers melt due to global warming. You can
have a sip for yourself.
