Conformity

Anyone in America notice how this mentality is so
prevelant? Is it this way in other countries. Fear of the
individual? Whatever it may be, being normal is "In".

It's animal nature. Some degree of conformity is necessary
for a community to survive. I don't think it's changed much
if that's partly why you're asking. Only now, they are
watching us online.

I actually couldn't say it's a mentality. I suspect I have
a lot less in 'common' than the majority has with itself but
I don't know what other people think about it if they think
at all.

nobody can legally be a nonconformist here.

What is a drop of rain, compared to the storm? What is a
thought, compared to the mind? Our unity is full of wonder
which your tiny individualism cannot even conceive.

Individuality in western society is an artform. Especially
for the people who have to work for their money. And the
fast growing population doesn't help either. We're all rats
in a cage. In the end it'll be that crowded we'll start to
eat eachother. Which, in a sense we already do. So, in order
to avoid being eaten you have to find a smart way to conform
while still maintaining your individuality. And it's fucking
hard, but the reward is definately there.

I think conformity is an even greater mentality of the East.

Japan is a prime example. About three years ago I saw a
large group of Japanese tourists at the airport who
literally all carted around the exact same type of suitcase,
which sort of resembled RD-D2s.

I think the idea of individuality is generally more valued
in the West, but that's not to say it doesn't exist in the
East.

Ophecks: I take it you're a SShock 2 fanboy as well?

What can one do that makes one a non conformist? Theres a
niche for everyone.

You want to have girls pee and poo all over you while you
masturbate? Theres a group for you!

You want to peirce every concievable part of your face?
you're a freak (even more then the poomasturbater), but
there's a group for you too!

I guess the true non conformists are the loners... usually
serial killers like Jeffrey Dahmer. He was so non conformist
that he'd strangle you and have sex with you after you died.
Then he'd save your hair and fingernails.

As long as the conformity is sincere and authentic, I don't
have a problem with it. The problem is that it usually
isn't, and even more problematic is the fact that not even
nonconformity is in most cases.

I had a bit of a rant planned out. Halfway through I
realized I would sound like a wanker. Just thought I would
pop in and say that 'non-conformists' are wankers.

Drunken Mastah is right. Usually non-conformists are not
sincere about it. Its kind of like the whole musicians
selling out when they accept money for their work. Its an OK
idea when you are 14, but adults should learn to grow up.

yep... people who try to be nonconformist usually just end
up comforming in another way. i know some people through
work who think of themselves as "part of the alternative
scene"... what the hell is that. its still a type of
conformity.

conformity is a product of socialization.
schools encourage creativity to extent.

I think we all understand how it is: you're out and about
and faced with an overwhelming wall of conformity (of which
you're not a part), and it ignites a frustration with the
continued lack of imagination and courage of 'umans.

American. You guys should stop expecting the world to center
around you.

maybe you should stop being a nazi, conformist asshole.

The truth of the matter is that by trying to be
non-conformist, you actually become even more conformist
because the conformity is playing even more heavily on your
mind.

And when you make the concious descion to become
"non-conformist" you also become an Elitest. You judge
people based on their conformity, which was probably one of
things you hate about materialist sheep conformists. You
become even more material.

If you want to be a "non conformist" you'd better be like an
Einstien or Galileo or something, with a good reason to not
conform. It should be something that happens naturally, and
should not be your primary cause.

and jusst getting some piercings and dying your hair blue
and refusing to wear North Face jackets or something dosent
make you a non conformist, it just makes you look like a
douche.

the closest thing to nonconformity would be simply being
yourself...so if you were to live forever youd be as
nonconformist as you could be. always changing would mean
you couldn't truly be pinpointed...you'd be like an elusive
visitor of the times just participating in the ongoing
trends as if you're 'one of them'

individuality could be viewed as a struggle with the self.
to desire individuality is to cling to our identity, and to
expect our single unit in some way to be more correct or
appropriate than our peers.

wouldnt it benefit society if people could drop this notion,
and consider each other in terms of equal value?

this is not conformity. this is decidedly non-conformist in
the sense that it goes against all the contemporary motives
of personal gain. however, the concepts of conformism or
non-conformism might not even have an application if
equality was at the foundation of society.

I agree with the 'being yourself' comment. . The most unique
people I have ever met are always the ones that were either
home schooled or grew up in a circus or some other such odd
background.
