I'm listening to Incunabula. Goddamn that's refreshing
stuff.

Timeless.

"When did this end? "

when producers (most of them) stopped caring about doing
something new and different.

i think IDM lost its edge when Boards of Canada became a
popular "idm" act. They offered nothing cutting edge
whatsoever to the scene and as a result many other idm
artists thougtht it would be ok to start making banal hip
hop music with warm pads over the top to sound like some
half assed aphex twin. But now the thing is after BOC its
now ok to make half assed aphex twin and be on big labels.

Now people are nostalgic for the good old days when they
used to listen to BOC music that made them feel nostalgic.

if anyone could find the first post on when 'idm' first was
said.. i tried to look.. but i have up since there was about
14k topics containing the word. that'd be an interesting
addition to the topic.

i've recently stopped all this genre mongering, it doesnt
seem to important anymore. i don't think a whole genre can
be cutting edge unless it actually does something that is
cutting edge. From my perspective it was the combination of
aphex twin, squarepusher, björk and a couple of others and
people like chris cunningham and michel gondry.

95% of idm is not cutting edge. 99,9% of rock isnt either.
