if you add up what i paid for all of my gear combined, yeah it is over $1000, but the camera itself has depreciated greatly (canon 300d). while i paid about $1100 including tax and an awful kit lens for it new (though the only reason i bought the camera was because i had earned best buy gift cards through my job at the time and didn't know what else to do with them, so i really paid about $600 cash), you could get the body used for under $400 nowadays. because i didn't know any better at the time, i made a really idiotic buy on it (had i waited another month i could have had the newer edition for the same price--by now they are on what is basically the third update of this particular model anyway). it's really not a pro-camera by any stretch, but, because it is an slr, i can swap the lenses around on it, which is a great advantage. i have two very nice lenses (and a few junky ones that have limited uses) that will be extra nice when i get a new camera some years down the line. that is the benefit to spending the lion's share on lenses and not a camera body. anyway i don't really anticipate making any more major purchases (i might like to have an external flash but that's like $300 if even) for a very long time, probably until i am done with college. i am pretty happy with the stuff i have right now and i have a lot of room to learn with it, too. |

i would probably have to do the same as you in order to save up for a pro camera. i barely have enough money to put gas in my car. i'd like to get something relevant for today's quality. especially when you want to get those vibrant close up shots, its all in the lens (as you insinuated). i've never taken photography up as a hobby simply because its too pricy, but someday i intend to. i guess all i have to add is keep taking pictures some of them are actually pretty good. it also wouldn't hurt if you smiled in your self-portraits... from far away ofcoarse, just kiddin. |
