I know a few of you have HP & Compaq laptops and so what I want to ask is whether any of you use USB/Firewire based external soundcards?
The on board controllers seem universally rubbish for audio and no matter what you do you get clicks and pops in the stream...more when you are trying to record audio in.
I switched all my applications to one I had spare and it has been a total waste of time. Because I thought I had set everything up I resorted to the "internet" to see if anyone could give me any advice and the message seems the same everywhere...HP are cack.
If you are looking at buying a laptop for music making, and you will want to use an external sound card, make sure it's not an HP/Compaq.

I have an HP Compaq and... I have no idea what you're talking about :)
However, I can testify that HP are cack - my daughter broke the connector of my laptop powerpack, and HP have started using a very specific thing that plugs into the laptop, so I couldn't buy a generic one, but spent three weeks trying to get one, as HP themselves don't stock them at all.
