i just watched this movie and im confused on a lot of things --
what was the significance of the centipedes?
is tom frost just an alter ego of bill lee's within his delusional state @ interzone?
the scene with kiki and the parrots --- what the fuck was that all about?
the significance of the cockroaches being his employers, and the bug powder, just what the fuck? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
in fact i have no idea about anything in that movie. its really too deep!!

I think in order to understand it you have to understand certain parts of william burroughs life at the time.

because it's directed by David Cronenberg and watching a movie is less time consuming? anyway, i read that it's cronenburger's interpretation and that it only slightly resembles the book. correct me if i'm wrong.

Never seen the movie, but I assure you the book is just as scatterbrained and fucked up, if not more. Burroughs writes walls of text that couldn't possibly be translated into film. A two page string of unconnected adjectives and nouns, for instance, isn't all that uncommon.
When I read his books, I read them for the rawness of it all. He's really vulgar sometimes, and his descriptions are priceless. I remember him describing someone's mouth as a hairy, dripping asshole that sucked up everything it could possibly sniff out. You're better off just not trying to analyze it, and try to look at it for its purely aesthetic appeal.
Course the movie might have done a shit job at capturing all that, so who knows.

The movie is pretty good, but it frankly has little or nothing to do with the book. The book itself has almost no plot, which makes any adaptation quite a courageous task. It's like (well almost like) making a film about Joyce's Finnegans Wake - no can do.
For what it's worth, and for what it achieves, Cronenberg's vision is quite intriguing. Just don't mistake it for Burroughs' own sweetly decadent vision. The book is a must read, and quite an experience.

dude, you totally got to be on drugs, mescaline, man, to read the book, and, like, see what it's about, man! Like you got to go, like, where the author went, like, and the only, like, portal into it, into that place, is mescaline man!

yeah i enjoyed the film loads i just couldn't really come to closure on what those centipedes were all about and what the connection was between the morphing typewriters, the aliens, and his wife Joan.
when i woke up this morning i watched the movie again and i realize now that there's a connection but it's totally this thick black hole of data my mind cant conceptualize.
has anyone here seen the 'tim and eric show'?

its basically a fly pod combo of naked lunch novel, burroughs life and cronenberg themes. read burroughs letters to ginsberg and you'll follow it more.

if you're not up for reading it at least listen to the audio book, as read by burroughs himself.
i'm sure you'll be able to find a torrent for it.

didja ever see mamorou oshii's avalon? the ending of naked lunch haunted me the same way avalon's ending did... it made sense that this next place was the appropriate place to go to, but, it also did not make any sense.
"welcome to avalon"... but it's like... 'why'?

videodrome is great. Naked lunch was just so hyped up to me before i saw that that when i eventually checked it out i was very underwhelmed. especially by the music which was one of the worst cronenberg/howard shore score's ever.

the book isnt fun and you cant just reccommend it to anyone because you claim to have 'read and understood' it. (same people who claim to read the likes of james joyce and not seeing what all the fuss is all about (regarding the extreme difficulty pretty much everyone encounters when trying to read it).
I'm convinced this book will have no meaning to at least 99% of the people who read it. It's cold, harsh, offending, bizarre, violent, and generally fucked up stuff that comes across as totally random. Having said that, i am happy that there are people out there who manage to get stuff like this published, and even made into a penguin classic.
I didn't hate the book, i just found it impossible to read as a book. If you can read it as words following up words, you might succeed.
Great movie by the way.
