albeit a little late, i saw this movie just 10 minutes
ago, and i'm astonished. this is a true monument of film.
it is quite rare that i have seen such an accurate portrayal
of the human condition and the state of our world today.

[POSSIBLE SPOILER]
The cut from the wife getting stitches to the japanese girl
was one of the most intense piece of cinema i have ever
experienced.

it's been a while since i was so moved by a film. Absolutely
excellent. Can't wait to get it on DVD, which of course
hasn't come out here yet.

Stunning music too.

Great film. One of those that i didn't want to end.

[MINOR CRITICISM]
Not wishing to urinate on the parade, but the whole (fake)
English people not giving a shit and making the coach leave
scene was a bit bollocks.

i liked it but not as much as you guys. i thought the cate
blanchett and brad pitt bit was unrealistic in places
(SPOILER: the coach driving off?? bollocks) it is extremely
well directed though.

Are you fucking joking? This has got to be one of the most
contrived and self congratulatory movies ever made. What a
load of fucking bollocks. I wasted a couple of hours of my
life watching this. I recommend nobody see this film. It's
all the wanky philosophy of The Matrix without anything fun
to see.

"t is quite rare that i have seen such an accurate
portrayal

this part makes it pretty obvious you're an american. im not
patronizing here or something, it's just an observation..

i liked the movie, thought it's sort of much in your face
(not sure about the expression)..everything is sort of
exaggerated..i mean stories like this can be told in a much
more subtle way..it's sort of a movie for the blind
even..still very nicely filmed though, good music, good
scenes..

"hedphukkerr from the ill mush hookup (United States) "

And this, this is telling me his is very, very American

im merely curious as to what "american" here entails.

i think you may either be misreading me, or reading
differently what i saw in the movie, because i thought one
of its strongest points was that in the end, everyone who
was from the third world got fucked and anyone with money,
despite a terrible journey was fine in the end. sure, its
unpleasant, but thats the way it happens nowadays, and its
humbling and frightening to see it on film.

ive actually most certainly noticed that kind of stigma
lately (obviously when you live in america the only
anti-americanism youre exposed to is white kids from the
suburbs with anarchy patches sewed onto their messenger
bags).

im just curious, what would you call typically "american"
traits?

I dunno... the movie did not give me enough to really care
about Cate Blanchett's character. I found that whole
storyline weak.

I enjoyed the Houskeeper's section a lot, although I can't
say I really feel bad for her. She deserved to get
deported.

And Cheiko, well her part did actually touch me. The world
can be a pretty fucked up place if you have a disability
like that. It will be the only thing I really take from this
movie.

i am European. and it is a great film, one of the best of
last year's, if not the best.

plot criticisms are not valid, since this isn't a film which
is driven by its plot, but rather by its idea and theme. it
isn't named babel for nothing, guys. so complaints about
the bus driving off, or other silly plot points are all
irrelevant.

Plot criticisms are always valid. Even for broad,
continent sweeping theme movies.

go and see inland empire. i heard the plot was geniusly
absent.

plot criticisms are valid, but only in films where they are
relevant. it is obvious that inarritu plots are
intentionally contrived to bring forward some greater theme.
it isn't a coincidence that all his three films center
around a single theme

I did see Inland Empire (with Lynch in attendance in a
screening near san francisco)... The plot was far from
non-existant.. it just doubled back on itself, twisted and
branched into tangents of dream and halluciantion. It was
intense.

Now as far as Babel... like I said... I really did not care
about Cate Blanchett's character in that movie... whether
she lived or died. We had one scene of her being
disagreeable and annoying and the next we saw her she gets
shot in the neck. I know you might say we were supposed to
care more about Brad Pitt's character in that situation, but
I still didn't. There was nothing to hold on to. It was a
good movie, but as far as construction was concerned, if you
want me to be empathetic with characters you need to give me
a reason first.

i thought it was ok, but again i found it hard to empathise
with some characters.. i thought the pace and score were
pretty good though.

I've put off watching this until I get over the fact that I
have low expectations about it being another hollywood
tearjerker of a feigned drama - this, again, is my opinion
of a film I haven't seen. Another film I hate and haven't
seen is Gangs of New York.

Critics are people, too, they say. But they say a lot of
things.

two different things though. i too haven't seen gangs of new
york and i don't care to either. but babel is a bit
different to your usual hollywood tearjerker.

yea, loved both 21 grams (especially naomi watts) and amores
perros. Certainly a great director. Which makes my
predisposition all the more baffling, i guess... Never mind,
I'm going to see it and probably be moved by it. It's just
that I hated Crash and don't want, again, to be led by the
hand to a point blank catharsis.

right. i know what you mean, and you can certanly get the
movie in that way, but there's really more to it...when you
see it you will know. every story per se is awesome, but the
whole thing together may give that wrong impression..i think
inarritu isn't trying to deal with the issue in a cliche
sort of way eventhough one can definitelly perceive it like
that..

heh, i watched this just the other night so this is a nice
coincidence.
the movie was real good, though the fact all the people went
through such terrible all ordeals, coincidentally at the
same & all happened to have some connection to each other
was a bit farfetched.
though, it was good movie and, just watching their
situations was real painful.

i was reading the imdb message board and some guy was
getting angry saying something like "ASIF A FATHER WOULD LET
HIS SON HOLD A GUN LIKE THAT. ITS SIMPLY NOT BELIEVABLE."
ahh lol?

According to Genesis Chapter 11, the Tower of Babel was
a planned tower in the city of Babel. Babel was a city that
united humanity, all speaking a single language and
migrating from the East, planned and began to build. They
desired that it include a tower with "its top in the
heavens" . In Genesis 10, the city of Babel was the
beginning of the empire of Nimrod.

As the story continues, God, seeing the city with its tower,
reflects that while the people remain unified, nothing would
be restrained from all that they thought to do. So He
confused their language and scattered them throughout the
earth .

What an asshole!

Cate Blanchett has to have one of the worst American accents
in all of film, she makes me cringe. Shes nearly as bad as
Brad Pitt is at speaking, well just about any accent.
