The Midwestern United States (or Midwest) refers to the
north-central states of the United States of America.

Does anybody know why this is?

i dunno.

i think maybe cause for the longest time everything west of
the mississippi river was considered western wilderness...
but, then people moved way through that, so places like
wisconnsin kinda weren't the extreme west anymore, but the
'west'ern part of the name stuck..

...and the whole southern midwest is basically just texas.

because texas is so big? and because
of the southern stigma of those states.

yes.
like dis dude says.
The USA was colonized from east to west. the mid-west used
to be the western border of civilized country. all the rest
was territories and camps mining towns and what not.

like the show Deadwood. that was what, Montana territory or
something? then there is that whole plot about the
politicians wanting to come in and make it a legitimate
tax-paying state.

but i digress.

They were only called that in colloquial times back when the
rabbit patches hadn't all been harvested and qrters ran
around free and naked on the plains. The real name given to
this mezographical terrain is the 'butt appalacians' named
after chief appalacian of the huggies ultra thin diaper
tribe. this was all fine and dandy until greedy hollywood
memorabilia venders sought to change the name to one more
apt for consumers and ice cream harvesters, which would
incidentally be the next wave of microprocessors (see
previous article). But the name only acted as camoflaughea
to the ice cream vendors and the region become a ghost area
for about 5 years inbetween the gulf war and the rise of the
canadian empire (about the same time ewalks were discovered
floating around in miniature spaceships in Bill Clintons
body.) That said, one can only marvel at the longitude of
the nomenclature and wonder what they were thinking. The ice
cream trucks were being repelled, the canadian government
was threatening banning all exports of grizzly bears, and a
whole new wave of counterfitters was making fake hollywood
memorabelia. Not to mention the affect this had on the
microprocessors. So finally, the region went bankrupt,
unable to stay afloat from attacks on multiple fronts. It
went public and everyone bid on a letter for the name. the
word "midwest' was finally pieced together, but it was like
draining the pulp of an orange with a ladel. But on
Decemburary 199the the word was finally coined and an entry
was made in new oxfords seventeenth exapedia. The area still
stands as it was 100 years ago to this day, a fine relic to
our past and a piece of our history. I have personally
urinated on the spot.

Deadwood, South Dakota..Real town.

Montana is the west

It has to do with the civil war and the North's inner
disdain for the south and vice versa

I see, I never thought of the term mid west as not making
any sense. Yeah, it should be called central America, but we
already get our designer drugs from a central america.
