I can barely lend a glimpse to your self portrait here. Your gaze is horridly open and true yet inscrutable. It makes me feel like a homeless begger on the streets of New York as you pass by to some hip high paying job, forever reminded that some are better than others...

Yeah, I was a bit tipsy when I wrote that discription of your self portrait. It was meant to be complimentary. But there is something very powerful about it. Good work. Is this going to be your profession, photography? Wisconsin. Is that considered the Mid West? I hate the Mid West. Back to the West Coast for me when school is all done.

No, i'm working on a political-science degree actually...I want to be a teacher but the secondary-education program at my university is very selective, taking just 15 students a year, and I can't afford to go out of state and I wouldn't go to a different in-state campus...so if I'm not admitted next year, I'll have to obtain a post-baccalaureate certification to teach in a high school. Or do something different...I really don't know.
Wisconsin is a beautiful state (yes I'm sure it's considered a mid-western state), but i wouldn't rule out leaving it for the right job.

I think it'll work out for you, but I must say that it seems that you're not totally committed.
If you do become a teacher you'll probably be that cool type of teacher that is meek and a bit prudish, but ends up inspiring a young depressed girl with your photography and stories of electronic music adventures. Just keep xltronic out of the discussion, it'll ruin your reputation and respect.

No, no, no! Well, um, you know, like your talents are hidden behind the typical teacher stereotype so they are a suprise to the depressed girl that you INSPIRE. Did I mention that you would be COOL also. Besides--come on, you are a bit meek and maybe a little prudish. Nothing wrong with that. :) A movie will be made about your revolutionary teaching accomplishments. It'll be called "Ms. Mimi's..." I can't think of the rest, but you get the jist of it.

I am female. And acting different from what when concerning males? If you don't like "how this place creeps out every single female that happens to chance upon it" then fucking leave. It's just the fucking internet.
By the way, some Spanish composers played their compositions at my University. They were horrible. There was this one piece for piano and oboe. When the piece openned with the pianist slamming his forearms into the piano keys I knew the night would be a disappointment. And it was.
I bet I could kick your ass in real life.

In general, I wish most social interactions were more gender ignorant. It's really primitive, and really bothers me. And no I won't leave, I'll just troll.
I basically don't know any spanish composers. My listening has been very myopic lately. Ha, in fact the most recent 'spanish' music I listened to was by ravel. de falla has some nice things.
I don't really go to concerts any more. Only one in the last half year, excepting friends' performances, but that was emmanuel ax just because my friends know him..
I guess I'm pretty boring, my favorite piano listen has been a really nice recording of scriabin 3 I've enjoyed for a long time..

The thing I don't understand is why is this "atonal" fixation still around? It's all about "cool" sounds, plucking piano strings and such. It's just stupid. Art music 200 + years old could convey a wealth of emotion within a few measures while this souless garbage has wierd and cool sounds. Ohhh.
The pianist would do some stupid florish, I don't know what it's called, dragging your finger across the white keys and sometimes only the accidentals. It was juvenile. And it seemed that there was no rhyme or reason to most of the playing. Oh, but he was fucking sight reading like it was some great piece of literature. I don't think you could notate half of what was played. Music has died.

There's actually a pretty strong reaction to atonal music these days; if you look at composition instruction at conservatories, it's reverting to a great extent.
There's a lot of value in the general approach in modern music, which in practice wasn't really realized. Basically, with late romantic music onwards, structure became very arbitrary, and lots of atonal music attempts to explore new structure. The problem of course is that this structure is often selected equally arbitrarily, and EVEN WORSE without any consideration of the human ear. Add to that people trying to get attention. As a result you have piles of gunk.
But I respect the attempt, even though most of it sucked.

I think that's part of the problem. This exploration of "new structure" or "structurelessness" disregards creating emotions with music. It turns music purely to mechanics, not a way to affect an audience, a way to convey feelings through sounds. And complex feelings at that. I can imagine these composers saying to themselves what would happen if they did such and such which is totally different from the norm or if they didn't do such and such, that they would be so inovative. How about telling me how you feel with notes. Yeah, how about that? And if their feelings are represented by a tone cluster then I feel sorry for them.
Anyway, time for exercise bike and some sleep.

Don't you think tonal music is just as arbitrary, and the "emotions" you get out of it are purely culturally defined?

i could write quite a lot in response to that, but it pretty much boils down to what what fabien (dariusgriffin) said.

not only culturally, but also personally historically. I'm also not sure if music is an attempt to convey feelings at all, at least not for me.. it's more about doing what I enjoy and that can range from mindless improvisation over the simplest scales with the only result being a cheesy movie soundtrack melody for a meadow panorama shot to experiments with layering the sound of nothing but everything (ambience) with itself or something simple like just reversing the entire track and putting it over itself going forward.
