that is awesome!
im still really unfamilair with terms and such but i think
we do a pretty hard form of yoga, it is quite a stretch
my teacher says you have to have a balance between
flexibility and strength so as to not screw up your joints
for instance. also you have to overcome barriers, meaning
you have to believe you can go through stifnesses
he's funny, he told us he recently went to india to study
and that set him back because he saw how little he's still
able to do..
what kind of style would you say you practise?
what do you have to do to become a teacher? be really good
and be able to see where others are at?
tnx

I have two teachers at the moment, one who teaches me asana
(the poses) and one who is taking the teacher training
course. My asana teacher is an Iyengar teacher, so we hold
the poses for quite a while and use props (blocks, straps,
boulsters) to help with some of the more advanced poses. I
would consider him to be quite a hard teacher, although I
have done work-shops with teachers who are even more full-on
than he is.

My teachers training instructor is far more laid-back. She
is more interested in teaching us to be holistic yoga
teachers, focussing on the student as a whole and not just
on how far forward they bend or how long they can hold a
headstand.

The course is 18 months part-time and there is no entry
requirement. However, if you intend to eventually teach a
class you really have to have develop a daily practice of
your own so you have some type of base to teach from.

apparantly i do Iyengar, just like darkpromenade. we
haven't used props yet though. maybe because we do it at my
kungfu school where we only have mats as 'props' (besides
weapons, lol)

the iyengar technique looks really helpful. i have a lot of
trouble getting into the advanced positions, but then i
totally expect that.

my class is full of hardcore students, but i dont compare
myself to them or get put off. it already feels rewarding ..
and the early time gives me a great start to the day :)

By Yoga, do you mean

a) Bending your body like Gerri Halliwell, Madonna etc

b) Sitting in one position for 10 hours in a bid to master
the physical being before engaging in meditation to master
(& demolish) thought

c) none of the above [please specify]

?

ashtanga involves a sequence of increasingly difficult
positions, held in conjuction with internal muscle locks and
a specific breathing pattern. its really punishing.

my plan was to take this up to reinforce my meditation,
which had grown pretty rusty. so far so good, theres been
noticeable improvement.

In an hour I have a yoga workshop where I might have to
teach to a class of very senior yoga teachers. I have never
taught a class before. I am shitting my pants.

This morning I was the least experienced yogi in the
workshop. I really struggled with some poses...........
most others were cruising.........

shit.

good luck with your class. that sounds like a daunting
situation. i have friends asking me to teach them what ive
learned, and thats more difficult than i expected.

my instructor tied me up into knots last week, my back feels
really unusual. there must be some muscles there that i have
never used before!

i reckon my experience in meditation is definitely helping.
i can bypass to some extent my emotional response to pain,
and push things a bit further :)

I didn't end up having to teach.... thank god! :)

Meditation is very similar to yoga practice. When your
holding a pose that you find difficult, or even simpler
poses you've been in for several minutes, the mind starts to
make "noise". Soon enough it will be screaming! Finding a
place of calm at these moments is a deeper practice....
flexibilty of the mind as well as the body.

class tomorrow.

I like doing it at home after work, dont know what a class
will be like.. are courses worth doing, or am I better off
at home doing it?

if you are the beginner you should do it with your teacher.
however you can perform some easier and safe asanas at home.
but you should do it properly. otherwise you can seriously
damage your body.

i should go back to yoga class too... 5 months without
training, shit...

I'm considering to start doing some yoga on my own.
I'm so stiff it's not funny. If I try yo touch my toes while
I'm standing there's still 30 cm of space between my
fingertips and toes. and I'm realy stretching myself. :s

but I wondering how healthy it is for your body to do
this

I'd really recommend you go to a beginners course with a
teacher if you really are interested in yoga. And go and
check out a few studios and talk to a few of the teachers
before you choose where to go. Like everything, there are
all sorts of yoga and all sorts of teachers!

Does Yoga include Meditation ? or am i mixing up things?

you are mixing up. yoga (hatha yoga by Iyengar method, or
Ashtanga) includes RELAXATION, no religious, buddhist
bullshit. However it might be very good way to deal with
stress. Also there is a great thing about feeling everything
more deep and full after regular yoga lessons (after 3, 4
months).

I taught my first yoga class last night!

I'm teaching a beginners class once at the YMCA......

(Young man......etc. etc.)

I had three students in the class last night. The big test
is will any of them come back next week!

Very confronting for me, being in front of people as a
teacher, but I was pumped after the class.

My long term goal is to teach more and work less.... and
this was the first step on that path.

I offer discount classes to all XLT members.
