rar

Requires another program to extract the files. What's wrong
with placing the files in a regular folder?

flac

Not compatible with itunes therefore I can't put flac
encoded files on my ipod. Requires another program to turn
flac to another type of "whatever-the-fuck" that can be
managed by itunes, which probably degrades the sound quality
even more.

.rar files are awesome
.flac files are for audiophiles and musicians.

"What's wrong with placing the files in a regular folder"
you can't send folders via the interweb + .rar files
compress the content, like a zip file.

or is this an elaborate joke?

rar kicks the shit out of zip compression-wise.

So it would be impossible to share, say, music in the DTS
format or an uncompressed DVD movie on demonoid without
putting it in rar format? (I use the DTS example because I
recently downloaded the format and it was in rar which
required me to download a program that may be detrimental to
my computer/privacy.)

As for flac, what's the difference to something more common
like apple lossless? Is the difference audio wise really
that perceptable? If so, why not just make a bit-for-bit
wav copy?

By the way, I really don't understand any of what I just
typed. Technology is complicated.

Yeah, I saw that. But I figure, maybe because I'm a bit
paranoid, that all this free software offered over the
internet is partly responsible for all the computer problems
people complain about. There's something dodgy about it...

Hello mimi. I've never had a problem with itunes. It works
fine for me. So does my ipod.

Winrar is not malicious in any way.

as long as something (say an uncompressed DVD) is one file
you can share it. you will often find people use .rar files
to group a few files together when sharing them such as a
.txt (text) file that give basic instructions or credits for
whoever is sharing them with the actual file, be it a .avi
movie file or whatever.

another usefull aspect is that you can group a whole album
of files together so one can download a whole album in one
file rather than each song indervidually.

winrar is nice - rars tend to save you a lot of time and
bandwidth.

wrt. flac: there should be no hearable difference between
flac, apple lossless, or any other lossless format. only
differences are in filesize, compatibility (does it play on
your ipod, for instance), and de/encoding efficiency (how
fast/efficient is the music decoded when you play it).

if you do hear differences, odds are the original sources
were different to start with. the same source compressed
with different lossless formats will sound exactly the same
(the geek in me tells me to add "by definition").

the best way to get the smallest files:
encode in ogg, then encode in mp3, then encode in ape, then
in flac
then compress in 7z then put that in a rar file then zip the
rar
throw it on a 3 1/2 inch floppy and take it on the town!

FLAC = Free Lossless Audio Codec

It is open source so I think that means you can make devices
that use it without having to pay someone to use their
format (like apple Lossless or .wma, right? even mp3?)
