NEW SIGNING! Warp sign Flying Lotus!
Body: MYSPACE.COM/FLYINGLOTUS

We are delighted to announce the signing of L.A. based
musician 'Flying Lotus'.

We first heard Flying Lotus when he recorded the track 'Two
Bottom Blues' for the Plug Research 'Sound of L.A. Volume 2'
EP. This track immediately stood out head and shoulders
above anything to us, we got rather excited.

Our instincts were further confirmed when other artists on
Warp such as Mark Pritchard and Prefuse 73 also started
enthusing about this young guy from L.A. making this fresh
and unusual sound.

So we got in touch, and everything fell into place, it
confirmed to us that Flying Lotus is a classic Warp artist,
a confident talent who's rapidly developing his own sound,
pushing it out and experimenting with a strong idea of what
he wants to do, but open minded and humble enough to know
that where his music ends up might not be what he planned
when he started.

Furthermore, it didn't come as a surprise when we found out
that Flying Lotus has strong family connections with two of
the most revered Jazz musicians of the 20th century; his
Aunt is Alice Coltrane, musical collaborator and wife of
John Coltrane and keeper of a rich musical legacy.

We welcome Flying Lotus to Warp!

From Flying Lotus: "Warp is the absolute best home for my
work. They know that there's a lovely thing goin on in L.A.
so by being their first L.A. artist... I got a lot of work
to do"

We've tried to add his profile to our page, but the search
function isn't working. So add him and read more from here:

Did he just unearth some old Mo'Wax records, re-record the
b-sides with the bass turned too loud, and get a deal?

Want to be "cutting edge"? Do a normal, rather pedestrian
track but add a bit of reckless panning, vinyl hiss,
granulizer, and maybe CD clicks, like, I don't know, what
they used to call glitch, and voila, you're not some run of
the mill "beatsmith", you're a fucking pioneer.

'his own sound' sounds kinda generic to me. maybe myspace
doesn't have his best stuff on it though.

Oh, so in other words, free access to jazz samples that
others might be denied - KER-CHING!

those boring rock bands.

I like it because it sounds a bit like the new tracks from
Harmonic 313/Mark Pritchard (and probably why he recommended
him to Warp). Finally, Warp does something right!

As others have said, it's harldy moving the sound of
electronica forward, but it's not particularly
objectionable, either. Better than another wanky guitar band
signing, but still, if you had a graph plotted of how good
warp was, it would dip a bit at the point where Flying Lotus
was signed, even if it didn't bottom out completely.

TBH, I'm amazed they've not signed someone like DJ Pinch
yet.

There is a lot of good things coming out of l.a. these days,
most notably; flying lotus, daedelus, gb, kankick and dntel.
I quite like the sound and the short highly sampled tracks.

He is doing a tour of the UK in November I think.

I checked out the Reset ep... I ended up liking it more than
I originally did from the myspace tracks. My favorite songs
are Massage Situation, and traptEEZ (which isn't on the EP,
just on his myspace). It's not as original as was touted by
warp, but still fresh enough to be enjoyable. 4/5
