Crunchy Guitars

I find that when it comes to the Indie Rock I like the
songs with crunchy guitars. I don't know what the actual
term for the effect is called but it's like the guitars are
eating a big bowl of Cap'n Crunch cereal. The two big
examples of this that I can think of are Stella Was A Diver
And She Was Always Down by the Interpol and Three Or Four by
New Pornographers. I've always been disappointed that I
could never find any songs as crunchy as these ones.

I think Shoegaze is more staticy and white noisy than
crunchy. I haven't heard the Strokes, though.

but yeah.

dunno what you're after.

Have you heard those songs? You can pick up on the crunch
right away in Three Or Four. Maybe I should just be happy I
have songs as crunchy as these ones and leave it at that.

strife - blistered
symphony in peril - portrait
nodes of ranvier - don't blink
helmet - in the meantime
mudvayne - dig
pantera - 5 minutes alone

just off the top of my head...

It's a distortion pedal into a pitch shifter for generic
crunch.

The distortion on cannon ball, Creep, and Today are 3 tracks
that stand out for me.

Helmet - I Know. It doesn't get more spine-chillingly
crunchy than that...

im guessing trainsistor distortion, really high compression
and low end.

I use a Boss metal zone (sweepable mids) through a DBX
compressor (with gate) to get my palm mutes to sound nice
and crunchy.

thats pretty much exactly what i was trying to describe,
minus the brand name.

boos metal zone is an amazing sounding pedal, i wish id
opted for that way back when instead of a flanger which
turned out to be relatively subpar.

Marshal heads and stacks are what most guitarists use. In
other words. I think bands use tube heads and overdrive them
instead of some magic pedal.

you can also overdrive the pres in some mixing desks. Thats
what they did to get that distortion on the beatles'
revolution.
