i recently got a nokia e50 and found some freeware divx
player for it. i put some full length rips on it and it even
worked quite well - but the micro-sd card is to slow to
handle those new high-bitrate files and there are a few
glitchs when i watch them.

that's why i wanted to convert the files to a lesser bitrate
- i guess i won't see any difference on the phone at all.

i searched with google and found a few positions but they
were all either to complicated or didn't work well. i would
really want something as simple as possible.

any help ?

Isn't it so that dvd video is just mpg files of some sort?
I'm not entirely sure about this, but if it is then using
virtualdub to first convert the files to the proper format
and then burning these files to the dvd should be the
solution.

However, I think there's some system or something on the dvd
that you have to have if it is to be recognised by a normal
dvd player. I usually use Nero for this, as it does it all
automatically (both recoding and burning), but nero is only
free if you crack it.
