The Magnetic Fields

Stephen Merritt makes the best gay music. I enjoy it more
than Final Fantasy, The Smiths, Queen and some bits of
Bowie. P.S. I am not a gay.

My favouritest Magnetic Fields songs in alphabetical order
are

All My Little Words
Asleep and Dreaming
Epitaph for my heart
I thought you were my boyfriend
If You Don't Cry
No One Will Ever Love You
Sweet-Lovin' Man
and that train song.

He plays a lot of different instruments and makes heavy use
of guest vocalists. Songs like I Thought You Were My
Boyfriend, If You Don't Cry, No One Will Ever Love You and
that train song make heavy use of electronic candy. Anyway,
I recommend them/him and these songs are probably a good
start. I wouldn't mind knowing the favourite songs of others
as well.

Most of his music is actually about heterosexual
relationships.

I rarely make it past the first half of the first disc of 69
Love songs, I just skip around my favorites, but Charm of
the Highway Strip is one of the greatest albums I've ever
heard, airtight pop songwriting clinic. Favorites would be
Two Characters in Search of a Country Song, Born on a Train,
Fear of Trains, Long Vermont Roads.

My girlfriend loves Magnetic Fields. I think it's nice. Very
dreamy and melodic. I know she bought 69 love songs but I
haven't heard that one yet. We've been listening to
'holiday' and I think it's delicious.

I really like "Get Lost" especially the songs "Smoke and
Mirrors" and "The Village in the Morning". I heard some of
69 Love Songs but I was put off really by the fact that
there were so many songs and the ones I heard I wasn't
immediately enamoured with.

I also like his side project Future Bible Heroes, though
"Memories of Love" ("Blond Adonis", "Real Summer", "Memories
of Love") I find is better than "Eternal Youth" because
again it's more concise, every song is great, and he sings
every other track whereas the second album he barely takes
vocal duties at all.

So do I. I'm not gay, neither is he, neither is obara?

When I heard the name of this band, I thought "hmm, maybe
something Jarre influenced?". Whatever I listened to of
their's was shit. Please don't make a joke about this.

tokyo a go-go is a great song. the vocalist on it sounds
awfully like aimee mann.

i've really gotten into this band, especially the earlier
albums. 69 love songs is okay, but very hit and miss,
imhotep. some really funny cynical romantic tunes on there,
'how fucking romantic' being a prime example. but, 'get
lost', 'holiday' and 'the house of tomorrow' (ep) are the
ones i prefer.

songs i really like (from the top of my head):

deep sea diving suite, swinging london, famous, smoke and
mirrors (!!), love is lighter than air, desert island, in my
secret place, young and insane, desperate things you make me
do, village in the morning...etc...i'll probably end up
listing all the songs from these albums, though there are a
few which don't really do it for me.

i don't see how it sounds particularly gay, the songs are
just done by a man, who happens to be gay and sings some
love songs about boys, that doesn't make it exclusively gay,
you know.

I have a gay old time listening to The Magnetic Fields. ^_^

Still a staple on my MP3 player during this summer's
strolls.
