i remember watching bbcs click a year ago, and watching their reporting on this internet thingy which hides its users ip address and such that no agency or no one can track the ip, because it gets hidden with millions or thousands of others or something like that. they said that it is a dangerous tool for illegal porn and other such illegal stuff. so i was just wondering if anyone might know what this? |

I used to use it a few years back. My feeling on the ethics of the matter is this: The bad guys (paedophiles, terrorists etc.) will use this technology anyway, regardless of the legality/restrictions on it. By outlawing it, you only succeed in stopping the good guys (dissidents in oppressive regimes) from using it. |

As I say, it has been a few years since I used it and I'd rather not detail the things I've done using it. ;) The basic principle is that it hides your ip address and the only records that can exist on the machine itself even if that were seized (if indeed, any exist at all) are all the people who have used it, not which session on the machine. IE there's no way to tie any individual to a particular set of actions. Some paranoid people use it as a matter of course, even for quite innocent web browsing, the same way some people insist of using PGP on emails that don't contain any secret info. It would be a wise move to use one if reading about (without an academic excuse for) or indeed practicing: hacking, credit card fraud, terrorism, etc. Naturally paedophiles tend to like them because it allows them to talk fairly openly (on messageboards etc.) without as much fear of prosecution. Anonymizer isn't the only one. There are lots of similar services run from free amateur/hobby servers set up by hacking groups to offshore (in international waters and hence largely immune to the police bursting in and seizing everything) hosting/anonymising services that cost a great deal more. |
