Jean Michel Jarre

In reading zilty I have noticed some negative references to
Jarre. Of course he's quite a bit more popular than the
average IDM musician, but I haven't seen anyone give a good
reason as to why they don't like his music. So why
don't some people like Jarre around here?

Is my observation that Jarre is widely disliked here even
accurate...?

I will admit that some of his stuff is kind of cheesy...

He predates intelligence in electronic music. But he's quite
awesome anyway, I've never noticed any anti-Jarre
movement... how could anyone dislike Equinoxe?

I could be confusing xltronic with watmm.

What do you mean by predating intelligence in electronic
music? What about the early electronic composers?

Did electronic music only gain intelligence when
"intelligent" dance music was born?

Intelligence inschmelligence, I was being tongue in cheek. I
haven't seen you around in a long time though so maybe I
should have used a smiley of some sort.

Oh, sorry. Unfortunately, the internet is not a great
apparatus for expressing or interpreting sarcasm.

And yes, I haven't been around here in quite some time. What
kinds of things are going on with xltronic? It doesn't look
like it's changed substantially...I'll reserve judgment on
whether that is a good thing or a bad thing.

I don't need to a give good reason why I find that
the pompous clown's overblown bombast gets right up my
shitter and I'd rather listen to my roof being damaged by a
reckless labourer than any of his bloody work. Ugh, makes my
ears feel like they've been farted into.

Jarre is extremely cheesy...

...but I like it.

It just sounds so nostalgic to me, but I'm not sure why. I'm
pretty sure I never heard Jarre when I was little, but
whenever I listen to Oxygene, I feel like a kid again. It's
cheesy and light, but there is a time for cheesy and light.

And you gotta love the old school synth sounds.

I like Oxygene. It sounds a little dated 2 me now but I
still think it's awesome and yeah, nostalgic.

I bought a best of Jarre ages ago but never listened to it
all the way through. Mostly shit.

Some of his stuff is great. "Zoolook" is enjoyably bonkers.

Who carries around with them the complete works of Jarre?
The more I hear of this pub of yours, the murkier it seems.

I don't know why he mimes everything live, though. It's
appalling. It's not like most of those lead melody lines are
that hard to play, is it?

I like the one he used in Paris with the light-up keys. The
lazer harp's obviously pretty cool, too.

laser harp kicks ass

AFAIK he held the world records for the biggest attendance
at concerts for a long time in the 70s and 80s and broke his
own record more than once. he must have been popular once

popular song in the world, even my neighboor's kid who's 11
knows this track !

It's probably the first electronic music i've ever heard. My
older brother had a tape with him i listened to often for
myself. I guess it coloured my youth a bit, so i do have a
nostalgic feeling about his older stuff. Nowadays he's a
playback wanker.
