I've lost my 2gb pendrive which had my university dissertation on it. I only had half of it backed up onto my computer, but another 2000 words and crucial adjustments stored exclusively on the pen drive.
God I am a fucking idiot. I've been trying to retrace my steps, but I think it has been missing since at least last Thursday. As if I didn't have enough to do, i've now got to re-write this shit.....
*rant over*

Oh dear god..
That's awful. I feel terrible for you.
I really hope (and believe) you'll find it. Check with all the uni security guard desks (or wherever lost property is handed in) and computer labs [duh]. Sorry I can't give any good advice.. I hope you find it..

The thing is, my mate at uni has also just lost his portable hard drive (with his ENTIRE work archive on it) and I gave him a diatribe explaining the need to back up.
Although I still have a good portion of my work, I really need to follow my own advice. I used to backup onto my website directly from uni, but since I got the pen drive.... well, it's just so easy not to.
FUCKFUCKFUCK.
Anyway, my mate is going into uni today and he said he'd ask in the technicians office for me (which is undoubtably where it will be, if i hasn't been stolen). I'm not holding my breath.

Really sorry to hear this. As redrum says, in future, always email it to yourself too. Did you have your email addy written on your USB stick? That's worth doing too, means people have a better chance of getting in touch with you, should they find it. Of course, all this is a bit of a case of "...after the horse has bolted."
Worth checking your university's policy, they may give you an extenstion (particularly if you have previous record of good grades and haven't asked for extensions before), although many say it's your responsibility to have backups.
Check at the union's front desk, IT helpdesk and with security, as well as the school/faculty offices for any school you've been in (or even walked through) recently. You could even send out a "to all students" mailshot. Offer a £20 reward for its return and you'll dramatically increase the chances of getting it back.
Best of luck finding it.

Heh, well my mate asked at uni and it's not there. So it has pretty much disappeared without trace.
I'll just have to grit my teeth and live with it. I could easily redo my text in a few hours and I still have a month to do it so it's not all gloom.
Oh well.

2000 words is approximately twice as much as I've written today...
