dont be silly. Most people here have tons of respect for
Banksy, as they should.

I don't hate TCH but i certainly don't love it either. I
know a lot of people here do though.

really a new hope and empire are the only truly good
starwars movies, and both of those are great. 1/3rd of jedi
is good, but the rest of it had to coast on the success of
the other two.

Precisely because it's a "genre", a formula, it's no longer
a movement where there was some common aim at pushing at the
barriers but the artists all sounded different, now it's
skittish beats, ambient drones, maybe a cut up break if
you're that way inclined... shall i have my Big Mac with the
bap on top or the burger then the bap, or maybe the gerkin,
then the bap then the burger.. still tastes like shit.

that one's not so much "cool" as it is "totally
unavoidable."

I can understand why people might find the fact it's no
longer pushing the barriers dissapointing and irritating,
but that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable. I mean, there's
loads more albums within other genres that sound horribly
alike (especially in the indie rock arena), and though there
are lots of boring "IDM" releases about, I think there's
always something special hidden away if you look hard
enough. I'd rather have skittish beats and ambient drones,
boring as they can get when they're done over and over
again, than another whinging, dull, indie album. I can see
your point, but I don't think "IDM" is the worst of
offenders if we're talking about following a dull formula. I
could listen to a fair few more albums with skittish beats
and ambient drones myself, even if I'd rather something more
original was done as in the old days.

The fact that people nowadays can use software with a
generic "IDM" demo patch on it i.e. reaktor / absynth has
wrecked electronics for me.

I blame technology for catching up with what people like
Aphex was doing 10 years ago. That's what has ruined the
genre for me I reckon. It means every cunt who can afford a
laptop can do it now.

Perhaps I should have posted this in the 'bored with
electronics' thread.

I definately agree with you here. I'm not saying that
generic sounding IDM is a good thing at all; I just think a
few recent releases have been unfairly treated, and that the
problem is even more prevalent in other genres then it is in
this little sub-genre of electronic music.

I cringe when I recognize preset "IDM" style preset patches
on mp3s...but it's no worse then hearing those same fucking
four chords again in a song, or those same lyrics on MTV
Base.

perhaps now we're waiting for someone to do something truly
original with the nearly unlimited power that computers
provide these days? someone with an amazing amount of
imagination. unfortunately i think people who really want to
do something unique are few and far between, even aphex
seems stumped in my opinion (judging from the analords)

What you say is true. The reason I'm so stupidly optimisitc
about electronic music is that the potential offered by
technology today is fairly flabagasting. Most of my favorite
electronic music is from the 70s and early 90s, but I hope
that people will start taking advantage of what's on offer.
I had a go on Pro Tools the other today (I can't afford it
myself) and it makes me sad that so many records sound so
dull when there is so much potential for something great.

IDM needs to be defined before it can be revolutionized.

Jazz was around for a good 20-25 years before Ellington came
along. Took another 20 years for bebop to come around.

Etc.
