vvvv
is a free environment for making visual arts.
i got so tired with all those dumb boring repetetive resolume vis with samples downloaded from youtube or porn.
it's very similar to max/msp - even the layout seems familiar but it's more directed into stricte visual stuff.
the site itself has a few great example patches, the forum is fast and polite and every "module" is very good explained with it's own help file and example.
there are also a few great modules made by fans for example a beatmatching one which not only gets the beat of the incoming audio but also splits it into four bands so you can for example have the hihats in a track make one hting and the bass drum make another thing.
highly recommended !

This looks pretty interesting. I'm going to have a go when I get a spare hour or two.

it's very cool designed - not only WYSIWYG but also completely real-time meaning that you can add modules, delete them, make whatever you want and you have the render window all the time besides you so you can control what's going on.
the other cool thing that there isn't any hierarchy of modules in there like in reaktor where you, for example, can just open modules of the lowest step in a higher one.
here you can save your whole session as a single module that you can add to another one, add something again save it and add and so on.

this is handy in two situations:
you don't have to make a big patch for your live set from the very beginning but you just think about one idea - make a patch, then somehting else comes into your mind - you make another patch.
then you just open them all up in a bigger one and connect the cables - done.
also - when you have a weak grafics card like i have you can, in a live set delete the modules that aren't necesary or that got boring and add new ones to save pcu.
and another thing - it's fully midi in/out compatible to reaktor/max/every midi controller you'd wish
