Seven or eight years ago these guys from Detroit were supposed to be really big news, being name-checked by everybody. But I never got to hear any of their stuff, and I think they must have split up by now. Does anyone know what happened to these guys, or what their music sounded like?

Infact they haven't split up .. but have come out with a new release this year (forget what it's called, but cdnow has it ..).
I have both The Quest and Neptune's Lair.
The Quest rox - in a old skool way .. very cool .. impromtu stuff - crunchy drums with a lot of interesting sounds and stuff .. i was actually quite dissapointed with neptune's lair .. ok in places, but dabbles way to close to trance [or something of that sort] in other places ???
also, Andrea Parkers take on drexciya (dj-kicks album) .. a mix of different "the quest" toons .. is well worth checking out - despite it being only one track :/, quite a cool cd actually!

Who are they, anyway? I know they released some stuff on Rephlex a few years back. Did you hear that?

They're still going strong. Their sound is definitely old school and very dancefloor friendly (although not enough DJ's are playing them out!). There's a new album out on Tresor (the title's something like "Waiting for the Storm") which is really good, dark, funky Detroit electro. Also check out "The Other People Place" on Warp (rumored to feature one of Drexciya) which came out last year. It's more of a mellow jazzy take on the Drexciya sound.
Classic Drexciya moment from "Return of the Drexciya" - "Boom boom chit chit ahhh"

The Rephlex release was Molecular Enhancement which was a repress of an early release on UR I think, with a different track listing(?).
It's hard as fuck, super dark electro, crunchy, distorted 140bpm business - in some ways similar to some of the Caustic 12"s or other electro sounding AFX tunes. You can clearly hear the Drexciya influence and it's obvious why RDJ holds them in such high regard - they're pioneers.

They released a new album in January on Tresor Records. It's called Harnessed the storm.
