i'm only 21 and its weird to think that people growing up
now have no recollection of life before the internet.

even tho i've had the internet for 10 years i still find the
idea odd. the experience was different then. you played
deathmatch duke3d on wireplay and downloaded Simpsons
soundclips of a homemade website with IE3 and it cost you 1p
a minute. with adverts. how its changed. how its evolved.
and the impact its had on the real world.

back then it was just a tool, but you still used a real
dictionary or encyclopedia, and now you internet it.

back then, you used clip art.

back then, you rang your mates on the landline for a chat

back then, you played modem games of red alert.

i dunno. discuss.

Good point about clip art.. I can't remember the last time I
saw Clip art for sale at computer software stores.

I remember, back in the day (10+ years ago), before there
were MMORPGs, something termed "Simming" existed in internet
chatrooms that were essentially text-based MMORPGs. Groups
of rooms were available for many different universes,
including Star Wars, Vampires/Werewolves, etc. Each chat
room represented a different locale within it's respective
universe. For example, the Starwars sim containted rooms
like "Mos Eisley Cantina," "Endor," "Rebel Alliance Base,"
etc. Joining that chat room meant you were at that location,
and while there you had to observe the rules of being In
Character, which meant talking as though you were that
person, and using symbols to show when you doing an action,
such as:

[Vykk Draygo] ::holsters E-11 blaster pistol::

Ah, those were the good old days before fancy graphics
became the focus of Role play environments.

the same was the biggest headache.

Back then you had dial-up.

Back then you had personal Geocities websites with animated
gifs and looped wav. files.

Back then there was Prodigy (not the band).

Back then there was the list of the Top 100 "Yo Mama" jokes
on one web page.

I dug up this mindblowing video clip off our family's first
AST computer depicting a younger John O'Hurley talking about
the wonders of Prodigy (the Internet service).

The connections/networkism of everything is increasing with
time.

the real question is, what will it be like when we are old,
its scary to think about - this thing will evolve and live
as we all die.

I remember having to buy DIE HARD GAME FAN just to get the
fatalities for the first betas of MK3 arcade, and a guy
telling me he got some MOVES off of a BBS.

One of the only places to get internet was at our library
(1995-96 ish) and there was ONE computer and you had to book
it. I remember not knowing how the fuck to use it and
calling my brother at home "I got time at the library on the
computer ... how do I use the internet???"

Then I just looked at a bunch of crappy Tripod Sailor moon
fan sites and animated gifs.
