I remember you being interested in "nintendo music" and that kind of stuff. I got into tracking recently with famitracker which is basically like working with a NES soundchip. You can even export to NES carts if you have the proper hardware!
So if you know tracking (I seem to recall you were) and want to make "proper" chiptunes with all the limitations of a NES chip, well, try famitracker out.
I recorded a few of mine to mp3, here's one. Keep in mind I've never tracked before in my life, so.

Those are all great and sound as described. That's pretty much what the interface of modplug tracker looks like. I should download this even though my brain can only distinguish like 3 different pitches and my computer is as scared of things outside its own personal living space as I am.
I've never used anything besides tracking pretty much (except audacity). I hardly know what a 303 or whatever you normally use is, but it obviously has better sound quality/ability.

TB 303 There's links at the bottom of the page for 303 emulation, the most popular is Audiorealism Bass Line.

Easy but fun sidescroller gameplay like mario brothers, actually like chip and dale's rescue rangers. You start this level on some conveyor belts with some puzzle that is easy to solve like, I'm not sure, putting something in a pot using the conveyor belt to move a weight that lifts a door or something dodging the occasional extremely easy oversized pirate enemy sprite. Then you go some beach type area with a pirate ship in the background that probably shoots cannon balls at you then maybe take a ladder up to a palm tree area etc. And all the while there's stupid 'things' you can collect but are basically unnecessary, usually positioned at the peaks of jumps between platforms. They're not coins since those were used in mario brothers... perhaps pirate hook icons or something.

That's very excellent. Maybe you can make music for flash games I'll never make. I downloaded famitracker... can you give me a quick summary of how to use it, like does it come with its own sounds or do you have to get those seperately somewhereere ar oait jaog. I know the basics of trackers though and it seems quite similar to modplug.

I had to configure the sound card stuff so now it makes pianoish noises when I press keyboard keys, but how do you enter data in? (select an area in a channel and press a key just makes a sound without entering data)

you have to make 'instruments' on the top right, hit new and configure it accordingly. if you had an IM i could teach you "live", but i don't think i have the patience to type up a huge tutorial post.

The last one is great mostly and they're all way better than what I can make but they all can use a process or relistening and recorrecting stuff that sounds off. Like the first 2 had repetitous kinda irritating parts that could be made better and the last one had 'percussion' that ended up more like out of tune melody bursts and would sound better if replaced with more white noise bursts imo.
When I used famitracker it only made gay watered down pianoish sounds, nothing gameboyish sounding like your stuff at all. Software hates me.
