if you were 18 and your parents were emigrating while you
were at university, and you had no other family or support
in your home country but had a serious long-term girlfriend,
would you go with your parents or not?

I would see it as the sign to spread my wings and fly, fly,
fly the family coop.

Where are they going? If they're off to New Zealand, then
I'd go.

Belgium - I'd stay behind I reckon...

I have no idea what a serious long term relationship is i'm
afraid, so i can't really answer the question. I'd have a
harder time leaving my friends behind i think.

Praise the Lord for our very own in-house agony uncle. Where

You're at uni and so not living at home anyway. I presume
after you've finished uni you will be moving into your own
place. What's the point in going with them and leaving your
girlfriend and friends and uni? Why not just stay here and
then in the holidays, you'll have somewhere different to
visit, for free.

No.

You can always go along later if you want.

there's something odd sounding about

'serious long-term girlfriend'

i thought all relationships were a bit of a joke at our age

Statistically speaking there's 99% chance that exceptions
exist. And if the events of 911 are taken into account
95,4%. This will be explained by Al Gore in his forthcoming
"An Inconvenient Truth II: You're all GAY!OMGS!1".

This happened to a mate of mine. He chose to stay in this
country and has never regretted the decision.

As others have said, you're of an age where you'll
(hopefully) become less and less reliant on your parents and
want to do your own thing anyway. Plus, free holidays when
you visit them.

18? good age to leave your parents behind, especially given
the circumstances of them moving far, far away, i'd say
