Ok, so i had a coming down to earth experience yesterday...
I was playing a gig with the band i am in as well as doing my own thing. I made a complete twat of myself. Basically, everyone including myself had been at a party the night before so we were all worse for wear. I didn't think this would be too much of a problem as We do that quite often. Anyhow we were playing very badly. Everybody being incredibley unprofessional and talking through the songs and stopping and doing bits over again. It was a fucking shambles. I was having none of this at all... During the last song after this stopping incident happened i unplugged the guitar and walked offstage. I decided after i had had some fresh air that i should go back inside. They all looked at me and asked if i was coming back. I said no. They all got angry. In the end i felt very guilty and came back on in the middle of the last song.
So generally i did the wrong thing for the right reasons. It dosen't stop me from feeling like a knob. I realise in retrospect that i probably should have just packed up and gone home without saying anything. That would have got the message across in a much better fashion. As it stands everybody was good sports about it. But still...
: (
So have any of you guys done anything similar?

one time i was playing at this rave in a warehouse in st louis. i managed to blow the speakers in the first minute of my set, and it took the people there about a half hour to get everything working again
by that point all the ravers were in a room upstairs laying on the floor with the lights out looking at glowsticks

It's obviously not the band for you. Maybe get Pete Doherty to fill in for you. He's great!

Yeah, I've had some bad gigs...not in terms of anything drastic happening, but more simply the fact that I've been booked to play at nights where the crowd clearly expected one thing (rock bands), and got laptops, synths, and electronic music instead. At one of these shows the Nord Lead 3 decided to start missing notes at random as I played them, so the whole thing sounded fairly dire, but the people didn't give a shit because they were talking too much to listen anyway.
I've got some gigs comming up which I'm vaguely looking forward to because I'm getting into ableton and have a nice new MIDI controller, but dreading because I hate playing to large groups of people unless they're dancing, and they might well not be the "dancing type" of crowd. Unless you're playing at a rave, it seems to be really hard to get a crowd to connect with what you're playing unless they've come specifically to see you. Even though that makes obvious sense, it doesn't make the experience any less pressurizing and horrid when you're supporting another band.

My gigs are comming through the label I'm with, Slowfoot Records; I'm utterly useless at getting them myself! Where are you based?

You, sir, are absolutely correct. When people make music, they either keep it to themselves, or go straight to the big-label Arena venues. There is no middleground.
