i experience way too much latency with USB midi interfaces. BPM's are always completely off and lots of notes/param-changes get dropped. in your opinion what would be the best solution? getting a faster computer that has firewire & grabbing a firewire midi interface, simply upgrading & getting a new computer, or getting something like an MPC for master-clock and sending/storing midi? i'd be comfortable getting an mpc for midi as i could just lay down everything on the computer, then store it on an SD card then let it go.
is there a particular brand which are known for making reliable USB/midi stuff?

USB is actually kind of shit for midi even compared to serial and parallel ports. Couple of articles about it here:
LAZY_TITLE
LAZY_TITLE
The article's a little out of date but it does mention that firewire throughput is timestamped so theoretically multiple audio and midi streams should remain synchronized. No idea if that's actually the case because I'm stuck with USB for the time being.

I use Opcode Vision on my PC (yes, from the early 90's), still works like a charm. For my interface I use a MOTU MicroLite 5x5. And I use the most current ASIO4ALL drivers.
I get 2ms delay.
That's my setup, don't see why it wouldn't work well for anyone else as well.

I wondered if you'd mention midi interfaces after getting a micro modular!
I've got the older version to one of these.
It's USB but has serial option too. The micro modular eats loads of midi ports...

I'm sure there are others. Search for MIDISPORT on eBay for a bargain MIDI interface.

i will likely end up getting the midisport 4x4, yeah. i've been trying to put off upgrading this laptop for a while now but if there's latency issues & notes dropping i'll likely just sell some stuff and buy a new one. argh!
i love the nord micromodular.... its so good

Do you know if it's audio latency or midi latency?

it's midi latency. for example, if i have my sps-1 following the bpm in whatever software host im using.. it jumps all over the place...

When you say "following the bpm"; are you using arpegiators or tempo syncing (MTC etc)? Or are you sending individual note-on/note-off CC stuff, and that has poor delay?

tempo syncing, and sending notes and CC stuff. both have delay and are always off/timed wrong

i guess you want to sync your electron over midi?
i read two months ago that electron wants to publish a midi usb interface with some new groundbreaking technique called "turbo-midi" which at the moment works only with electron stuff.
i can't find any info on their site but maybe it'll be soon released

with that micro-modular there is a particular issue:
you see - the problem is that midi goes there in and out in a loop which is refreshed all the time over causing a massive flow of data through the cables.
try unplugging and just leaving the connection pc-out-modular-in if you haven't checked that yet

wouldn't go with that one - the drivers haven't been updated for years - esi quite forgot about that one.
but there are a lot of good interfaces in the same price segment:
m-audio 410 focusrite saffire le presonus firebox

I use rolands first usb midi interface ever (smpu64, 4 x 4, bought 1999) with my macs, have never had any problems with it. Edirol (a Roland brand) makes the current model. Avoid all m-audio products, their drivers are a bad joke...

Like avart said, bad drivers. Also, shitty construction, and poor customer support. They are like a mix between creative and behringer. I feel its always a bad call to go with any companies budget brand, such is the same with edirol. My rule of thumb at the moment.
Your second post makes no sense, so I am going to ignore it.

M-audio cards work fine for me, but I'm on PC. I've heard bad things about their Mac drivers.
Their keyboards do feel cheap and cheezy.

Part of it is m-audio products that I have had in the past. The other part is reviews of their products that pretty much say exactly what I found with their other products. Pretty much that they make good stop-gaps, but not good permanent studio solutions.

Yes. This is true. A good artist does not need money to make good music. That shouldn't even need to be stated here. My counterpoint to that argument is you get what you pay for.

More to my point, you can get something much higher quality by investing not much more. Just because a lot of people have behringer or m-audio does not mean that it is good. It is just because they cut their prices a few dollars below everyone else, and flood the market.

right! the market is full with names and numbers, only thing you can do to check the quality of the product, is waiting untill some asshole will buy it first, and read his review
