No. I do it because:

a) It's Fun.
b) It's a way of ensuring that the music played on a night
out/at a party isn't mostly gash.

theories.

I thought the main effect of being a dj would be to have a
load of dweebs hanging around looking at what you're doing,
people asking you to play stuff, getting into tiresome
shouted conversations over the blaring music and trying to
get someone to go and get you a drink.

That's the long and short of it. For every remotely
attractive girl, there 10 blokes (usually youngish kids) who
keep leaning over to shout or ask inane things and keep
banging into the desk as they do so, causing the records to
skip. I've even had someone (who I didn't know and had never
spoken to me before) told me to "Look after my pint
while I dance." This wasn't a polite question, it was said
as an order. I asked him if I looked like a fucking barman
and he seemed genuinely offended.

Other top ones are "Can I look through your record box?" At
which point they proceed to drop your records all over the
floor and bend the sleeves and them wetting their knickers
if you have a kaoss pad. I've actually not taken it to
places with a fairly accessible desk before, because the lit
up touch pad seems to scream, "Lean over and mash at me
arhythmically, drenching the sound in bad reverb and making
every one in the venue glare at the DJ" and frankly, it
pisses me off.

I've never really understood what the kaoss pad actually
does, I think

Can you somehow record something where you use the kaoss pad
and periodically contrast it with dry versions of the track
you're using it on? Maybe also comment what it actually is
you're doing?

Actually the one time I did DJ I nearly got into a fight...
with a girl. Though she did buy me half a lager afterwards.

Half a fucking lager, who buys half a lager? I
suppose if you don't really like the person you're buying it
for...

offline Ceri JC from Jefferson City (United States) on 2007-02-02 07:55 [#02043525]

Buying someone half a pint is like leaving a 5p tip at a
restaurant; it's an insult, that's what it is.

DM:

It's not hooked up to my computer at the moment so
unfortunately can't record it, but basically it's an "all in
one" FX box. The quality of the fx is fine for DJing, but
I've never really thought they were up to scratch for studio
work. The touchpad is just like a bigger version of a laptop
touchpad and for each of the different fx, the x-axis
controls one paramter and the y-axis controls the other. You
can set it to "hold" and fx being on, or just when you tap
it, so for example you can add reverb to the snare in a
break, but not the kick drum.

The xy pads in Fruityloops /Ableton are basically copies/do
the same thing.

There's also an incredibly limited sampler built in with
only 5 seconds of sampling time (I think this is expanded on
the KP2 and is certainly better on the KP3).

i actually stoped djing because of that. i mean on every
single party i played there were always these stupid trancy
girls who had no clue what i was doing and praised me like
like god.

of course they always yelled when there was a breakdown in
the track thinking this was my intention.

yeah-cool-music-you-play-very-experimental-got-any-prodigy-
oh and i left because those questions

AT EVERY SINGLE PATY !!

(oh and btw. don't expect to get nice girls into your pants
when playing idm...)

there is nothing worse then being at a wikkd party and then
having to stop socializing to go and DJ. I'd rather have a
couple of pints... dance... goof around with friends....

rather then stand around. make sure you're set-time is
locked. spend every $$ buying records. worry that your
headphones will break. you remembered your dj needles....
and the million other issues with dj'ing...

plus if i hit a big sound system... I'd rather bring gear
and really knock it out.

i actually never liked playing alone - we have rou local
dj's crew here called "comicstore" - we meet every now and
then alltogether and spin around black ones.

it's always fun you know - i mean sometimes we are like 6
dj's at once and when one is on the decks the rest tries to
find a track that will fit.

it's cool when you have a set consisting of music of a few
guys.

a male or a female friend, tridenti? just curious..

i dj because, i don't know really..because it's nice when
you make people dance maybe..i don't like to be in centre of
attention so i would prefer being hidden, but then i
wouldn't get any feedback so that wouldn't work..im doing a
6hr set on thursday btw, should be fun.
