I am always trying to expand my musical experience (as my Last FM page will attest). I'm just wondering, since the majority of us probably have broadband, do you actively seek out as much diversely ranged music as possible, or do you mainly stick to "safe" and "known" styles? Recently, I've been downloading a lot of 80s hip hop to better deepen my affinity for this branch of Western Culture. Latterly I've been getting some Indian music - ragas by Nikhil Banerjee and other stuff (not too much of it around within easy search-reach). Anyway, just curious INNIT. |

yeh i try too but i dont really have the time or patience to follow through. at the moment im actively seeking how to make FTP fucking work for me. and the band/person Dimlight. heard a track the other day and cant find anything on the internet! |

i check stuff here and there..usually thoroughly when something interesting comes up..which is often..therefore i spend a lot of time searching and listening..it's all good as long as i enjoy it though! |

Of course. I have Wire magazine and Radio 3's Late Junction and Mixing It shows to thank, along with an old friend of my uncle who threw loads of classical and avant garde composition my way last summer. Speaking of which, he lent me Shankar's (not Ravi) 'Who's To Know' on ECM which you should check out if you like Indian music. |

I love hearing music from genres I wouldn't normally listen to, though inevitably most of it I will discard. However, when you find something you do like, thats when it becomes worthwhile. Some of my absolute favourites pieces of music were recommended to me by people who don't listen to "my kind of music" and despite my initial reservations, they grew on me. As a person, you're constantly changing. Things I enjoy today I simply could not have listened to about 5 years ago. Still, it still requires that "leap" into new territory to learn about them in the first place. |

I love the way I can just casually hear something, and be able to track it down and then investigate that avenue and see where it leads me. Two instances: 01:: A few months ago I had downloaded a BMX video, and I really enjoyed a couple of the songs on it, by Home and Snowden, so I downloaded their stuff and found some modern guitar-based music I could really enjoy, and two more bands I had discovered and added to my databanks. 02:: I stumbled upon Bob Brozman a couple of days back on Demonoid, doing a search for Ukulele (since I am a Uke owner and wanted to hear it played properly). A quick trip to Allmusic whet my appetite, so I downloaded a couple of his albums, and saw that he had one with an Indian dude (made a thread about it), so I downloaded it and LOVED it. This led me to deciding to get some more Indian music, and I'm in the process of doing that now. So I progressed from UKULELE to RAGA ! |

I check out new artists, I usually don't care about style. However, it'll take more for me to actually check it out if it's confirmed as being some sort of normal boring rock before I check it. I haven't really found many new things lately, but that's because I've been getting back to some stuff I used to listen to more before. The release of Orphans made me dig up all the Tom Waits albums again. |

A lead-on from the hip hop thing. I watched a show about the development of funk on BBC2 after James Brown died, and it had something about Stevie Wonder. Now, I was guilty of pigeon-holing him at the time as the dude that did I Just Called To Say I Love You. I was so intrigued that he had more depth than that, that I immediately downloaded all of his albums from the 1970s and discovered they were amazing! This is where I discovered "Joy Inside My Tears", a song which so moved me that I made a thread about it @ Xltronic.com/mb |

Passively. Good music just knocks on my door saying I should listen to it. And so I do, from time to time. I can't be arsed to actively search for it. If it's good enough it'll reveal itself sooner or later. |

I'd like to say that I'm always trying to expand my horizons, but I'm not. Fact is, I more or less only grab albums by artists I'm already familiar with. I don't actively seek out anything new. If I happen to hear something, then sure, I'll check it out. But as far as deliberately searching.. nope. |
