surely some of us can play some REAL instruments

I was thinking this thread could maybe, be a good place to
ask for advice, give advice, and link to useful stuff for
learning to play some instruments

when I say "instruments" I mean something that needs timing
and/or melodic talent, I'm thinking guitars, piano,
turntables, bongo's and things like live sampler/drum
machine playing etc..

let me know what instruments you play,
I play guitar, turntables, and an old drum machine.

I'll start with some youtube links

drum machines/mpc's

lakinilk does mpc solo then breaks it down
da vinci doing mpc guitar solo

guitars

guitar lessons with IRON MAIDEN!
tapping lesson w/ Paul Gilbert

turntablism

scratching 101
dj
fooders beat juggling tutorial

c'mon guys SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE.

nice!

I've got a modified electric with inidividual pickup
switches so I can do the tom morello guitar scratching
thing, and I've broken the two highest string, so I'm trying
out standard cello/violin tuning, it's a lot of fun,.. and
judging the note intervals seem easier when it's set like
this too.

at a place called the glitch bar with the "8-bit" crew in
melbourne australia late last year, and yeah I played on my
own, but I'm thinking of starting a group so that more of
the music can be live, as opposed to me just playing over
stuff.

just imagine this and this with guitar
and noise over the top and you get the idea.

I was air guitaring over one of the later sets when he
played a song I knew back to front, it was great!

a year of classical guitar, a year of jazz/flamenco
guitar!!! And i learned piano on my own... honnestly! If
you've got that passion for playing music, one can learn an
instrument on his own once ya know at least a bit of the
basics.

Well, I have a Roland HP HP 137, which has MIDI
compatibility, so I guess I could hook it up to the laptop
-- Is there a way to transfer the actual sound of the piano?
Or would I have to assign some crappy MIDI patch to it? I'm
not clued up on MIDI at all.

Excuse the late reply - you'd have to record the MIDI from
your keys into ableton or cubase or something. Then send it
out from the PC back into the keys, and then audio record
the line out. That said, you could just record live directly
from the line out - if you're without a decent soundcard
just go into the PC's line-in or even mic slot.

Yeah, I'm going to investigate that. I have both Ableton &
Adobe Audition. I've settled on a nice easy piece for
starters, a slow movement in F major from a Mozart Piano
Sonata :) It's a lovely piece! Would the quality of a
line-out from my Roland to my laptop sound OK? I mean, the
quality wouldn't be terrible or anything? And I wouldn't
need a special audio lead or anything? Think I'll pop down
to PC World or Dixon's tomorrow, in that case, and see about
picking one up!

Get the gain right and I'm sure it will be fine.
It's not the "be all and end all" anyway.
I've found it's always a healthy thing to hear your
performance, as you sit back in your chair with with the
piano switched off.

If you find that you need to re-record a higher quality
take, then get the gear (buy/loan/whatever) and lay it down
again.

Hope that made sense - I'm tired x_x

I play a little piano. Here are some recordings of me
playing my own compositions:

nov_13_2005.mp3

nov_7_2005.mp3

nov_26_2005.mp3

dec_6_2005.mp3

This thead makes me kind of sad, because late in 2005 I was
playing piano and writing a song every day. I haven't
touched my piano in nearly a year. :(

learn keyboard, then i took a music theory class. i'm good
with chords and making melody, but i'm no soloist unless i'm
bouncing about in scales.

that's used too.
