Why is rubbish music high in the charts, but futuristic music nowhere? Are people really that stupid?
Lucky I found a forum where people can appreciate GOOD music. We're on a level. ;-)
Doesn't it make you angry how rubbish music is popular?

I'd say IDM is pretty big in Paris. Or maybe it was. Now it's all about the annoying post-IDM glittery acts, like TTC and Justice and such.
Except from IDM, what are your main hobbies?

IDM is better than other music because it is more intelligent and therefore exists on a higher plane above all the other, intellectually inferior genres

A lot of my friends think that IDM is "just drums" or "noise" or just plainly "shit".
I love IDM, but I also love SOME commercial stuff, the new new wave that appeared a couple of years ago was great, but now it's been destroyed by over-production and EMO.

If you find that person and convince him to decide IDM should be the music everyone will be listening. It'll happen.

yeah, i did the same thing once at a party, put on icbyd, and everyone got real quiet and just stood there listening kinda like how dogs ya know like perk up their ears and tilt their heads when they hear a sound but it was cool tho cuz they were actually paying attention to it like they couldn't wait to hear what was gonna come out the speakers next. ready to jump on the band wagon with whoever said that it either sucked or ruled like if someone would've said this sucks everyone would have immediately started yelling this sucks or if someone had said this rules everyone would have started cheering this rules. instead the owner of the house who was throwing the party was all like idk about this and so everyone was all yeah idk either. so i put on reel big fish and the party resumed everybody was like YAY! ska is happy music! WEEEEEE!!!! rudeboy do the skank!
true story.

I went to this one party, a two floor house, and everyone there was listening to hip hop and rap upstairs, downstairs was the louge, where everyone went to smoke, or lie down on a sofa. There was hip hop playing down there too, but not many people were there, so I switch the cd with a few mixes I had in my bag, namely boards of canada and richard devine. Later that night I had richard devine on, some people left the room, others stayed, others were just too drunk to get up. This one gangsta guy came in looking all furious, he was the owner of the place. I thought to myself, oh shit. He came in and sat down, then he started to look around, wondering what that blaring noise was, he went over to the stereo and I thought hes gonna turn this off. He turned it up to max and sat back down, screaming "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? I LOVE IT!"

yeah cool story!
I mean Idm like most types of music takes some time to get used to and understand. Unless you have been exposed to it or listen to it fully in its intricacy it will just sound like noise to ears used to simple, comforting mainstream beats and chords. A lot of people listen to music in a very superficial way, its just background sounds, but its not a matter of intelligence really as suggested earlier in the forum, its just a matter of interest and training.
I noticed this a lot Djng and trying to push IDM/glitchy sounds to a dubby psychedelic ambient scene. I had to push in the sound gently, picking tracks that maintained a warm soft base and emotive melody, but with some glitchy elements, just to give people something they were comfortable with but spicing it up a bit, then little by little getting more glitchy. This progression worked well and people end up enjoying very abstract glitched out tracks in the end, but if I start of with Multiplex or Edit from the beginning, people dont understand it and get put off =)
Anyhow, im quite exited cuz on the 9th of feb im experimenting and doing the first IDM/glitch room at my party which generally remains in the psychedelic scene. I'm really curious to see how people will react!
check it out here if you are interested in the line up

funny thing is this thread got me thinking about charts and how songs get charted...
I think part of the problem on why IDM and glitch isn't more recognized is that not enough of the artists are releasing music as a purchase product and if they are they're not including the ISRC# or releasing it on websites that are charted by the UK Chart counting whatever company....
I think if more artists used mainstream sites to retail their music, and included ISRC# it would be the first step to atleast capturing the number of songs that are being sold that are IDM.

it comes down to this. sell your soul, make the money. keep your integrity, and play at a hole-in-the-wall for the rest of your life. success in music is either appealing to the masses or being EXTREMELY badass at what you do.
